Car Care and Detailing Thread

Others mentioned I should start this thread in my other thread. And while I won't have the new car for a while, I'd like to hear some thoughts and recommendations so I can have most of it on hand before the car shows up. My other thread had a lot of great posts in it and you guys have been a big help.

While black cars looks great clean, keeping it relatively clean in Phoenix might be the death of me. But I'll sure as shit give it my best shot.

I actually like cleaning and waxing our current cars but it's not like I am being meticulous about it. I've never had a car with rims either and I know those can get dirty quick. I've never owned a dark colored car and I've never had a car with leather. I plan to take really good care of this car and would like some tips on doing so. But I'm just a ****ing n00b.

I'll throw some links out from Amazon as I mention things.

Some of the things already on my list are:
1. Not sure if everyone recommends wool wash mitt over micorfiber here but many people I know do?
http://www.amazon.com/Mothers-Genuin...wool+wash+mitt

2. Grit guard and two wash buckets. One for rinse and one for soap/water.

http://www.amazon.com/Mothers-Genuin...wool+wash+mitt

3. Waffle Weave Drying towel. There are tons of towels out there but this seems to be able to take up a lot of water.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001Q8DMA0/...I21164SXVV1AWB

4. Car Wash

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0009IQXFO/...b_recs_2_title

Some mention that after washing you should use a paint cleanser before waxing. But wondering if washing then clay baring is sufficient prior to wax?

I've seen this P21S Paintwork Cleanser mentioned on a few reads. Looks like good use for water spots and swirls prior to waxing if needed. Not sure if you would do entire car first or just use it for bad spots before waxing?

http://www.amazon.com/P21S-12350B-Pa...twork+Cleanser

Also, a company called Zaino has great reviews and recommendations. They have a package that looks like it includes all products I'd need together including wash, polish, wax, leather and tire care.

http://www.zainostore.com/mm5/mercha...y_Code=prokits

I do not have a polisher and would need to get one of those as well but not sure where to start on that front.

Can't wait to see what you guys have tried and recommend.

Wash by hand and you will find all the scratches.

its tough to find one everywhere. Most people don't care if those big ass rollers scratch up their paint.

I use the touchless wash and then use a specialized product to finish the cleaning.

If you want to make sure you don't scratch your paint when cleaning it, almost everyone agrees that the two bucket wash system is the best way to wash your car.

It's labor intensive but you can pay someone to do it. I paid $50 but that was a full detail of the car, with using the two bucket system to clean the outside of the car.

l now do it all myself for reasons not concerning money or cost.

Yeah I was afraid I would hear that. I guess I'll just have to hire some swinging dick to hand wash. Really difficult to do it this time of year. I'm really afraid to mess with those automatic car washes now that I have a nice car. I've seen and heard the horror stories.

I guess I can use the spray gun washes with quarters for extra time to wash off the salt for now until it gets warmer.

When I was at a charging my car the other day one of the guys there had some water less wash. Whenever he charges it, since he has a little time on his hands he just gets out this waterless car wash bottle he keeps in his car, some rags and would spot wash his car if that makes any sense. I hadn't ever heard of such a thing. I can't imagine that can be very effective if there is lots of dirt, salt and grime on your car.

IMO if your looking for scratches and swirls robo washes touchless or not is the place to go. There is so much sand and grit in those things by time you get to the blow dry you get sand blasted. If they have a couple slapdicks at the end to get what didnt dry wave them off. No telling whats in that towel or if its been dropped or even changed out.

Stick with a mild soap and water, Dawn will take the wax off (insert Beevis laugh) I have always have been a big fan of 2-5 gallon buckets and a hose. A couple of sheepskin mitts and lots of rinsing.

During the winter using the high pressure wands works just remember the wands don't get it clean so your just rubbing the dirt into the paint when you wipe it down. Just blast it and hit the road.Wash the windows as needed.

I used to take a5 gal paint bucket with lid filled with hot water and mitts to the wash at night and after knocking all the shit off , I would wash it by hand and use the wand to rinse. I had several owners chase me off and post signs...

* never let soapy water dry on a car and if it does wash it again with soapy water to get it off.

I don't like touch up washes but if you keep your ride polished, glazed, and waxed they serve their purpose i guess, I've never used one.

May I ask what the new to you ride is?

make sure you or whoever washes the car to use the two bucket car wash system. Hand washing, even if careful can cause issues with the paint. Just google or go to you tube for the Gary Dean two bucket car wash system. I also order my cleaning supplies from him. The detail juice.

Thanks for the help. I've always had 6-8 year old cars before this ever since I was in high school & college. So don't do much attentive washing.

Nice ride, lot of goodies?

I was in an S several times and was quite impressed, deceptively fast and for me almost too quiet. like have to use the cruise around town quiet. I found myself at 60 when I was thinking 35 several times

I know you want to keep it nice and not treat it like an appliance, but you do have to sacrifice to have great cosmetics. Either find a detail shop that will wash de-tar, clean, polish, glaze, and wax the piss out of it a couple of times a year or learn to do it yourself.
Washing it by hand is one of those sacrifices I choose to make but you can make it look "client" nice by blowing the crud off. Green Lantern is worth checking out. or hitting the hand wash.

Srvy and I agree wiping it down after a less than thorough wash is more damaging than leaving the film.

Good luck, May I suggest you look at buying a random foam applicator and start reading up on what to do and what supplies you will need. Or just drop a few hundred at the detailing shop and wash it however. I got one for a runabout and started using it to apply glaze and wax. Really works well, light.

Here's some reading material....http://www.detailedimage.com/guide/A...ilingGuide.pdf

Gary Dean , I think he used to e a State Fair "barker" I'm still not a fan of rinse less washing but it does make sense...

I have a Porter Cable Random Orbital that I purchased to correct the paint on our Toyota Highlander when we had it. Wife took it to some third-world car wash that 'waxed' it. More like 'swirled' it. It was horrible. The Porter Cable along with Adams polishes and pads really worked wonders.

I recently bought a new 5.0 Mustang (2017, Base GT with manual...Sold my old Vette) and waxed it with Pinnacle Sovereign paste wax. The car is Silver Metallic, which is not exactly the target market for Sovereign, but the car looks fantastic and that stuff is so easy to work with, I am sold.

For the daily drivers, I usually use Meguiars NXT and Turtle Wax Ice Spray Wax when I'm feeling lazy.
