USA Today predicts Chiefs at 4-12 for 2014

I could see it happening but really 6-8 wins seems pretty doable.

AFC West

Broncos 12-4 (2): Could be better than 2013 team even if wins and offensive output dip. But schedule is murderous.

Chargers 8-8: Last year's schedule allowed late-season charge. This year's could easily produce late-season slide.

Chiefs 4-12: Tight salary cap meant crippling free agent defections, and they didn't sufficiently reload in draft.

Raiders 3-13: Best thing influx of over-the-hill vets can do is change culture. Carr, Mack promise brighter days ahead.

I don't understand this idea that it's better to be "almost good" than "certainly bad".

Ask any NFL player if that's good enough for them and they'll tell you that their one, and ONLY, goal is to win a Super Bowl. Anything less than that is splitting hairs/moral victory crap.
I don't see an Andy Reid football team with Alex Smith and 5 other pro bowlers winning only 5 games this year.

As I said, I don't think it will happen either. But it could, and that scares the shit out of some people.

They'd rather be 8-8 vs. 5-11.

Why? What does the team actually gain?

The answer is nothing. Moral victories exist only for the fans.

Going 8-8 would likely mean that some of the young players (OL, DBs and WRs) actually stepped up and are developing into good players. I would say that is a big gain.

The difference in 6-10 and 10-6 isn't really that huge. 1 play here, 1 fumble there.

As much as the trade for Alex Smith and him being on the team speaks against it, this is actually a pretty young football team (outside the obvious vets here, who have been thru some rough years).

They need to continue to learn to win.

If they just get lucky, ala Rivers fumbling the snap is it worth it?

At the end of the day you still have to score more points than the other team, even if you get lucky. At this point I don't see how our secondary is going to prevent points from being scored or how our OL is going to enable our offense to score - so yes I think 8 wins would mean they both show demonstrable improvement which is better than a handful of draft slots. Unless you tell me KC is going to win 1 game and there is an Andrew Luck available, I'll take the improvement of the young players on the team.

This answer to your question is simple. How do the draft picks progress? That is the single most important part of this whole thing.

Draft well and nothing everything works out.

So your take is that young players only improve if you win.

Young players can improve without directly impacting the wins column.

Can they?

I'm not so sure that they can from either a personal standpoint or, especially, from a team building perspective.

Culture of winning.

Draft well and nothing everything works out.
Finishing 8-8 vs. 5-11 says nothing about how well your draft picks are progressing.

With modern free agency, there is no linear progression in wins and losses.

Eric Fisher could become the best left tackle in football and the team could finish 6-10. Go out and sign a Pro Bowl corner next year and they're suddenly Super Bowl caliber.

Records, from year to year, are largely irrelevant.

Going 9-7 every year and losing in the first round of the playoffs isn't "culture of winning".

Tough to do with a team that isn't/wasn't active in FA. What I mean is, if your team doesn't bring in vets in FA/trades and you win more games than expected, then there is an excellent chance that the young players on your team are improving and are the reason for the increased number of wins.

I disagree. Kelce, Fisher and Catapano playing well would be huge for this team. It would change games.
Same for Dee Ford and DAT (especially DAT)
