Which sport produces the least exciting highlights?

For the life of me, I can't understand how dunking a basketball is exciting. Congratulations on your two points. The other team will be making that deficit up in the next minute.

Oh, and **** the Spelling Bee.

I was thinking about trying to keep in olympic sports like track and field, but we already call them "the olympic games" and they are no less prestigious for it, so I can go along with the requirement that you have an opponent whose athletic actions on "defense" can impact your performance.

Maybe we can keep his no voting rule and carve out an exception for combat sports. Judged events like diving and skating probably could use 100% objective criteria (perhaps using computers to help for things too fast to track with the eye) with a winner declared only on the basis of facts on the field, but we choose not to do that.

In a fight, the goal is to have a clear winner with a knockout, technical knockout, submission, or whatever. We're hoping it doesn't go to the judges unlike in judged events where we've agreed to subjectively judge everything. The purpose of the judging in combat sports is to answer the question "if this fight had no time limits and could literally go on forever, then who would win the fight?" (yeah, I know you can have a fighter who outpointed his opponent on early rounds losing badly in late rounds, no system is perfect, but thats the question we're trying to answer) Due to time and safety limitations we can't have untimed bouts, so maybe we can allow it and still call them sports.

For me, basketball is the most boring. They let the players palm the ball, take extra steps, etc. It's turned into a 3-point shooting festival. Not sure what can be done to change this and I'm probably in the minority on this. Seeing a 7' tall guy dunk a basketball isn't that impressive; a 6' tall guy doing it is more interesting IMO.

Watching the highlights of this couldn't be less interesting.

Guess I'll take soccer just cause it's always a tie.

2nd is basketball. I'm not impressed with dunking on a 10' rim when most of these guys can just stand on their tip toes and do it. Make that rim 15' and then we'll talk.

Is dentistry s sport ? The hand eye coordination to repeatedly perform precision movement in a confined LIVING space is very hard. Try doing eight hours of Dentistry being out of cardiovascular shape . Dentistry is a sport.

Hrm....that's a good one. On the one hand, the voting is just a tie-breaker, if you will, if a winner isn't determined in the preferred manner (KO or whatever). On the other hand, should two guys (or gals) clubbing each other into submission pursuant to a particular set of rules really be called a "sport"?

I lean toward yes. I checks too many boxes for it not to be a sport. Voting AS A TIE-BREAKER can be an exception to the rule I think.

Agreed. And I completely dont' diss the Olympic games. There's NO FREAKING QUESTION that the winner of the decathalon is one HELL of an athlete. That the fastest sprinter in teh world is worthy of all the accolades we can throw his way. That a Mark Spitz or Michael Phelps is an athletic wonder.

They just don't play "sports".

Yeah, agreed again. The voting is really a tie-breaker method. At the end of the required time, neither had achieved victory in the preferred method, and so we have this alternative method of determining it. In theory, at the end of a football game, including OT, you could have a panel of voters award victory to the team who had "played the best" too, instead of letting it remain tied, but if you did that you wouldnt' suddenly disqualify football as a sport.

Same with baseball. Hell, maybe they should have tie-breaker votes after the 18th inning!!

Home runs are pretty much only exciting bars on the situation. The actual act of hitting a home run isn't very exciting.

I'm not sure the Curling isn't more exciting than golf. Baseball might have excitement but doesn't have many highlights. Diving catches in the outfield, throwing someone out trying to steal are about it. Homeruns aren't really a highlight although they can be exciting.

Golf
Baseball
Soccer (bicycle kicks are a highlight play)

??? How are home runs not a highlight?

Also, what about:
Triples
Inside-the-park home runs
Game-winning strikeouts
Diving stops/catches on the infield
Dinger-robbing catches
Hit and run
Late-inning rallies and heroics
Unlimited comeback potential due to lack of clock

Man. I just don't understand how people (especially sports fans) don't like baseball. It's such a beautiful game.
