It's no secret that T0DD and Big Ben never got along.

To be fair Ben isn't exactly a rocket scientist either but those two never seemed to find common ground.

For a franchise that has been a QB dumpster fire I can't imagine Haley having the patience to groom a green rookie...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

At the same time, you can't pass on a QB after in 2 years they passed on Wentz, Trubisky, Mahomes, and Watson. And if they go the Alex Smith route, when will they again have the chance to sit on a top 5 pick ever again? The Browns have to draft a QB but they can't rely on him.

The Browns also can't afford to sell their fans another losing season and Dorsey promised an immediate winner. They are desperate for that more than any fan base has ever been.

It's not stupid. It's the Browns' best play. Get stability right away through a short-term veteran QB, transition it off to a top 5 QB in a few years once the franchise has stabilized.
If they go the Smith route, the plan would be to have him as your QB for the next 5 years. Otherwise he is a 1 year rental and he would not sign long term anyway, and that is not worth giving up a 2nd rounder plus to acquire him.

As for the rookie QB's if you take a QB 1 you are going all in on his development and banking on him being your franchise. LOL taking a QB 1 and thinking you can't rely on him, if that is the mindset he is not worth a 1. All of your QB's you mentioned besides Mahomes played extensively their rookie year and really Mahomes would be much further along if he played 8 games last year. He also was not a top 5 pick.

Browns fans will get behind the team if they are showing they are adding talent and will come out to see the No 1 pick. Dorsey knows that the fastest way out their problem is to stock pile talent. They are getting 5 starters out of their 1st and 2nd rounders they have a ton of cap room to add FA's. Taking a QB 1 and planning on playing him does not automatically equal a losing record. They are going to be a whole new team next year anyway.

Smith isn't playing 5 years anywhere.

You sign him for 3 and use this draft (perhaps the next as well) to build talent around him. Get him a good "utility HB" (can run, catch passes, etc) and some talent at WR. Draft your QBOTF in year 2 or 3 (depending on the talent in the draft.)

That defense is already solid vs. the run. Improve the secondary, HB, and WR positions and that team could win 6-8 games next year...

Again I can see them going this route. But not pursuing both courses because I doubt Smith resigns if you take a QB 1st in the draft and then you have blown a lot of picks on trading for him. Not to mention the best way to develop a QB is to let him play and give him all the practice reps. Also Smith is 34 next year and I do not think it is unrealistic that he plays until his 38 season, but I think a team would be better off going a young guy who has a strong arm. Think Smith winds up in Buffalo.

With their picks and cap room the Browns can be competitive if they can convince FA's they are headed in the right direction.

Exactly.

Plus Big Ben might be done after this year. The Ravens are very middle of the road. The Bengals are the most talented hot garbage in the league. A "win now" approach would make sense.

And Browns fans would probably be ecstatic going to the playoffs 2 out of 3 years after the last two decades...

Excellent move. I’m impressed.

I’m going to go ahead and assume he’s thinking this could be his next head coaching gig.

This is the entirely intelligent way to go about things. I don't understand how anyone could disagree. Whether it's Alex or another vet, this WILL be how Dorsey will go about the rebuild.

You have to remember, Cleveland isn't Kansas City. They've drafted and busted on first round QB's for decades now. What they NEED is STABILITY in the franchise. You know Alex Smith isn't the guy to take you to the promised land. But he's ABSOLUTELY the guy to take you to being a stable, winning football team. Just like he was here. And you'll never pick this high again as long as he's your QB. AND he's already proven to be a good teammate and helped groom and train his replacement TWICE. For Alex, he knows he's only got a few years left. He's not going to be worried about looking over his shoulder, he knows his time is short regardless. It's a perfect situation for him and for The Browns.

They will spend on Cousins, then trade away the first overall pick, loading up on defense and weapons.

Alex will end up in Arizona.

Smith is a good soldier and team mate. But he is not wanting to go to a team that drafts a QB 1. Sure if traded he has to for a season. But why resign? Sure they franchise tag him but will they for 20+_million? No, when they have their no.1 pick and can use the 20 + million on players. So 1 year for multiple picks is a stupid move by the Browns. Smith is going to want to go somewhere where he is the QB and they can win in the next 3-5 years. The first pick in the draft is not setting 1 year let alone 2-3.

Not only are you counting on Smith staying for another year in this scenario in spite of reports of wide interest around the league not to mention the necessity for KC to save cap room, but you're also counting on Mahomes not being an obvious better QB than Smith in training camp and the offseason.

In other words, shut the **** up.
