LNBS: what Clark Hunt needs to do about the attendance decrease

Terez Paylor wrote a good article today about the Chiefs as seen here: https:
http://amp.kansascity.com/sports/nfl...167419087.html

In the article, it highlights slight decreases in attendance.

Quote:
After all, the club ranked ninth in the league in attendance last year with an average of 73,328 fans per game, despite being one of the NFL’s smallest markets.

Still, the numbers do show a downward trend, miniscule as it might be. Despite the Chiefs’ success the last four years under Andy Reid, the club’s attendance has dropped a tad each season since 2013, when an average of 75,359 fans trekked to Arrowhead Stadium.

Read more here: http://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl...#storylink=cpy
It appears that the Chiefs (and the NFL) are fighting technology.

Here's what we know Clark has done:

1. Hired an elite caliber coach that has built a playoff caliber team every season.

2. Drafted an exciting QB to lead the franchise for years to come.

3. Renovated the stadium with new features including the fans "locker room club"as seen in the link below.

http://www.kansascity.com/sports/nfl...166836692.html

If you're Clark Hunt, what are you doing to add to this and get attendance into the top 5 again?

The number of seats which are sold times the selling prices of those seats are the primary thing they care about, not the number of seats which are occupied on a certain Sunday. Many of the empty seats were in fact sold.

The number of seats which are occupied is a function of how optimistic people are about the team's prospects, who the opponent is, the weather, and all sorts of other things.

Of course, they want the seats filled because it increases parking revenue and concessions, but bottom line, they are charting all of these factors and charging the most they think the fan base will tolerate for all of them. A team is going to charge every nickel they think they can charge until they would cross to the other side of the curve, where it would bring in one less nickel for the year to charge one more nickel.

I think what is really going on is that people are becoming disillusioned with the NFL's product itself, so their tolerance for price increases and weather and teams with middling prospects has gone down.

Has Clark tried to charge for PSL's yet?

You have to pay for the right to buy tickets.........

When Kansas Motor Speedway pulled that it blew my mind how greedy stadium/franchise owners had become.

That's when I said **** them. This is getting out of hand.

Pretty sure attendance is down throughout the league so I don't this is as big of a deal as it is made out to be. Although the number of Steeler fans in the stadium during that playoff gm was disturbing..

as others have stated, sitting at home with a big TV, being close to that bathroom, having as much beer as I could want for the price of two beers at the stadium, way better food. and if the Chiefs stink up the joint in the 1st half, I could turn it off and start doing something else with the rest of my day.

Plus, being AT the stadium, is actually quite boring most of the time. With all the timeouts, commercial timeouts, reviews, etc....the actual action on the field is pretty small.

Arrowhead was awesome back in the day when it was the only option for entertainment on Sundays. Before big TV's, sunday ticket etc. Hell, when I worked at a retaurant in the food court in the mall in 93-95 in HS, the owner would only staff like 2 people to work on Sundays if the Chiefs had a home game that day. It was DEAD at the mall, adn the entire area around the mall/streets etc, was like a ghost town because everyone stayed home to watch the game. Again, only entertainment option on Sunday back then.
I've had the Sunday ticket for 7 years and haven't gone to a football game since 2009. The game day experience of paying for overpriced food & drinks, parking, missing half of the afternoon games and all of the other early games because I'm in the stadium and sitting around a bunch of drunks yelling stupid shit is vastly over-rated. I can't believe anyone even goes to games anymore.

This is the main reason for me as well. Can't take kids there because of the drunks cussing all game long. People standing the entire game, getting beer spilled on you, long concession and bathroom lines, high prices, etc.

It's worse than playing golf at a public course on the weekend!

If parking prices are so high, why don't people just Uber or Lyft?

Price is probably the biggest thing for me. Before I had kids, I could justify the cost more. With 2 more tickets, and less disposable income, it no longer can be a spur of the moment decision.

Sorry, there are better things to do that don't cost me $400+.

I don't know if people would come for the Dallas cheerleaders, but I'm pretty confident they don't come for the current pack.

I'll be in KC for work during the MNF game. It's a $30-40 Uber ride each way from my hotel (JoCo) to Arrowhead, and that's pricing it today and not during a peak event. The only benefit of that stadium being out in the sticks is the parking lot to tailgate in.

Something happened in 2013, but I can't put my finger on it. On a more serious note, I greatly prefer going to a Royals game over a Chiefs game. The Chiefs games are claustrophobic, the fans are about 3 times dumber, and I just feel like I can't relax and have to scream the whole time.

Hey, I like screaming at football games. It's fun and it's a great outlet for times when your team stinks. I'd yell at baseball games too, but people would probably think I'm a lunatic.
