How old is your car?

Cars have become extremely reliable over the past 20 years. In 1996 the avg car in the road was 3 years old. In 2006 it was 10 and now it's 12.

How old is yours?

same here.
I get that sometimes you have to finance / circumstances or whatever. and I've done it before, but just hate it the entire time I owe money.

My latest car i termed for 36 months but on schedule to pay off in 24. My wifes Xterra we did for 48 before it was paid off last week. When we were really young, we would routinely term shit to 60 months or 66, trade cars in that didn't need to be while still owing money etc. I wish I could go back to my former self and kick him in the nuts.

BTW-all red cars.

We usually drive new but do drive cars for a long time.
Too bad the poll cannot have multiple options.
My current car is red - makes me much happier. My old Impala was nice, but it was silver. Silver sedans are about as exciting as driving a gallon jug of milk.

4 cars in the family. Newest one is 2010. Oldest is 2004. Only one with less than 100K on it my daughter just wrecked so will need to shop again.

On another note, insurance in Florida is costing me $6K/year. There's no break for liability only coverage. I remember in Missouri you could save 50% in liability only. Here it's more like 90% liability so only makes sense to cover fully.

I misread the chart - the bottom axis is 8 years. Not 0.

So the avg age rose from 8 in 1996 to 12 today.

Only car we ever had a problem with was the Impreza, which blew a hole in the side of the engine right after we bout it with 120,000 miles. We put a used in engine in it and now it's doing fine.

One of my friends has an early 90s Impreza coupe. He commutes from south of Jeff City to Columbia every day, and has over 300,000 miles on it. I don't think he's ever had a major issue with it.

The failure we had was pretty rare. I feel good about the car now and it's in nice shape. It was for my youngest son. He drove in high school but it has been parked the last two years while he is in college. He just drives one of our other cars when he's home so I am going to wait until it starts snowing and then sell it.

He swears by Subarus. That's the only brand he'll buy now.

My Forester has been great. It's old enough now that we just save it for winter duty but it should last almost forever that way. Subaru + snow tires = ultimate confidence on snowy roads

Yeah, I believe it.

My '92 (first car) was a piece of shit by '99. Granted, that could've had something to do with a 16 yr old flogging it for 3 years (and being a one of Chrysler's notoriously shitty K cars), but I remember most of the mid-90s Chevy's being turds as well. Seemed like trucks were the only thing that held up worth a damn back then.

I took my 2000 through to 2008 with no issues; sold it to my dad who eventually gave it to my step-sister. It made it to about '13 and it was one of the chrysler cloud cars.

My '08 Nissan made it to '12 with heavy use; 130K miles when I traded it in. It had plenty of life. My present '11 (bought a model year behind to get it cheap) is at 115K and I haven't had any problems with it since about 40K miles when I was having the waste gate be a pain in the ass. I'd trade it in but I haven't found the SUV I'm after just yet. It's still a really good car.

My favorite vehicle that I've ever owned was the 2000 Eddie Bauer Explorer that my wife and I split time with for a couple of years in the 2005-2008 range before she took it until 2011. Ran like a top, destroyed the weather. Loved that damn thing; drove it for 6 years and traded it in for 2K less than we bought it for (thanks Cash for Clunkers for wrecking the used 4 wheel drive market...). It had 125K miles on it and I'm convinced it's still on the road somwehere today. Absolutely outstanding vehicle.
