Anyone here ever have a torn labrum?

I have been having problems with my right bicep and shoulder for a while now and finally got around to going to the doctor about it. They poked and prodded but basically said to try physical therapy before doing a MRI to actually see what's going on.

The PT decided I might have a partially torn labrum, where the bicep tendons attach to the shoulder joint. He didn't seem very positive about the whole PT thing and kind of insinuated that I might have to learn to live with it. It severely limits the range of motion so that would suck.

Reading about it online, it sounds like surgery may be the only option but it introduces other issues (adhesions and scar tissue). So I was wondering if anyone here has had the surgery - especially if you are older - and had it be a success. Or if anyone has gotten better just with PT. So far, PT has mostly just made it hurt more but I am open to the idea it may work.

Just for reference, the issues I am having is limited range of motion and pain when pushed too far. I can touch my left shoulder but not my back over the shoulder like I can with my left. If you "make a muscle" (think Billay) and then rotate your forearm from 90° up to 90° down, I can only go about halfway down (parallel to the floor, not perpendicular). Pulling down on something, like closing a double hung window, flares intense pain in my bicep and shoulder. Reaching behind myself, like to tuck in a shirt, is awkward and painful.

Ok - commence labia jokes now. However, I am hoping to get a few serious answers too.

I've had a torn hip labrum for a couple of years. After 2 cortisone shots it doesn't bother me near as much anymore.

PT helped my left shoulder labrum. 8 weeks of PT. I know when the weather is about to change.

Thanks for the new posts. It sounds like extended PT is the way to go for now and surgery only as a last resort. It also sounds like it would be very worth it to find a higher end surgeon than the doctor at our little, small town hospital if I do the surgery. I'm in the Spokane, WA area, blake5676, so I can't take you up on your referral offer. Thanks, though.

I forgot to mention one of the biggest problems with this. I am having a lot of trouble sleeping. I use a CPAP and I usually sleep on my right side as that works best with my mask, Unfortunately, that puts a lot of pressure on my shoulder plus my hand will go numb and tingly during the night. Sleeping on my left side causes my arm to hang, which also hurts the shoulder. I can't sleep on my stomach with the mask on and I stuff up and can't breath when I'm on my back. It sucks.

Speaking.

Tore my left shoulder labrum in '05 and had surgery to repair. Pain sucked for about 5-7 days, and I had to sleep in the recliner in order to keep my arm stationary. Rehab was no fun initially and it took a bit to get strength back in the shoulder/arm, but after the fact years down the road my left shoulder is probably stronger than my right, and I'm right handed. I can't imagine trying to muscle through that injury without getting it fixed, frankly. Scar tissue has been an issue in the time since, but it's manageable. There's been twice where I've popped my shoulder in such a way and so loud that the people around me asked if I was ok, lol. Kind of hurt when I did it, but felt good later.

TL;DR - surgery sucks and rehab is a pain (literally), but down the road you'll be thankful you got the surgery.

If you don't mind saying, how old were you when you got the surgery? It sounds like age might be big factor on how well it takes.

I was 35 at the time. I think you and I are around the same age (mid 40's), but I seem to remember you're a health guy and a runner? I'll say this much - get it done now if you're even considering it.

A few years after the surgery, I adopted P90X as my everyday workout for a couple of years. Shoulder felt good as new doing it.

Just pay extra close attention the next time you beat it up watching Barbara Dare's old videos. If there is some slight discomfort in your shoulder, you may want to get it checked out.

You definitely have me confused with someone else. I'm pretty much a couch potato and not a runner (though I do enjoy hiking in the mountains in the summer) which is probably why I am having issues now. I'm a little older than you, too (52). This is a wake up call, though, to get into better shape.

One thing I can't stress enough, if you do end up going the surgery route, is to find a SHOULDER surgeon. Don't go to any old orthopedic surgeon who does elbows, knees, shoulders, hips, etc. Do your research, and get a fellowship trained shoulder surgeon to be the one to cut on you. Good luck!

I had a Dr. Dan Stechshulte do my shoulder. He was just an Ortho, but everything seemed to turn out well for me (knocks on wood).

But yes, I agree with blake. Do your research and find a specialist to get it done right.

My brother completely blew his labrum out, and it took the doctors over 6 months to diagnose it as a tear.

Can't give much advice though, sorry.

I just want to congratulate CP for being so posthaste on the labia jokes. I may kill myself mountain biking one day and it's good to see others standing up to tradition.

Well done!

I tore mine in the gym doing overhead press. Had the surgery (was early 30s).

If you do it, make sure you get into PT right after surgery... my dr had me sit in an immobilizer for a full month first so it healed into that spot and my PT time was spent tearing through the scar tissue and unlocking it. Hurt like hellllllllllllll. Took about 9 months to "fully recover" (for lifting and putting serious athletic strain on it).

Still pops and feels weird when I do certain lifts but I'd say I'm 95+% now.
