Report: Chris Berman to retire from ESPN after 2016 NFL season

http://thebiglead.com/2016/05/26/chr...ng-espn-after/

Quote:
Chris Berman is Retiring From ESPN After the 2016 Football Season

By: Jason McIntyre

Chris Berman, the longtime ESPN sportscaster who has been with the company since 1979, is leaving the network after next football season, multiple sources tell The Big Lead. Berman is in the final year of his contract, which ends sometime after the 2016-2017 football season. He is expected to retire, rather than leave for another network.

ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz declined comment this week.

Berman, 61, joined the network a month after its inception in 1979 and in addition to being one of the company’s longest-tenured employees, he’d certainly go on ESPN’s Mount Rushmore. As such, the network has lavish plans for a send-off that one source said might be akin to the way the Lakers sent Kobe Bryant into retirement. ESPN is currently preparing “summer camp” for its NFL TV team – which will feature new faces like Matt Hasselbeck, Randy Moss and Charles Woodson – and plans are being hatched for Berman’s send-off.

Who will replace Berman on the network’s popular “Monday Night Countdown” and “Sunday NFL Countdown” shows? Many have written that longtime NFL Live host Trey Wingo is a natural fit to replace Berman, but there is a strong internal push for Suzy Kolber to take over Berman’s chair.

No decision is expected anytime soon.

Can we accelerate this process? Why do we have to put up with one more year? This is going to suck. A farewell tour with 17 Berman catch phrase specials. Pull the trigger now!

Who gets to comment on the next 7th round draft pick surrounded by cameras Michael Sam waiting to kiss his gay boyfriend. Yeah, Chris Berman was the problem with that shit stain channel.

We can go with Tim Tebow or Payton Manning like Kim Kardahian coverage if the gay kiss throws you off from E! SPN.

while I enjoyed his "act" when it was fresh, it got stale.........and his shameless love for the bills and chargers made him that much more unbearable.

And yeah, just go to youtube and watch the videos of him being a gigantic a** to staff.

While I dont work there, so I may not know the whole story - he just seems to be the type of guy that really let success go to his head - and treated everyone around him like peasants.

NFL Primetime with Chris Berman and Tom Jackson was an NFL Sunday must-watch with the long form highlights of each game.

Berman's act got old and stale over time.

Back before the internet highlight days, NFL PrimeTime was my fav sports piece to watch.
While many people can't stand Bermans schtick, his voice brings back some child memories of watching sports with my dad.

Good run Berman!

ps: take Tom Jackson with you... The Race Card is a schtick that has been used too many times as well.

This for sure....

ESPN has turned into a mess of epic proportions. They've diluted themselves with too many ESPN channels, women sportscasters, political bullshit, horrible reporters and pretty much have only a few good shows.
  • 30 for 30 is great.
  • I like Wilbon and Kornheiser.
  • Some college football isn't bad.

Aside from that not sure what else I watch. Even getting basic scores at the bottom anymore take an hour to get to the score you like with all the other bullshit they send across the screen.

Funny thing, in the morning financial channel CNBC just scrolls scores like a true ticker. Much better. Fantasy sports ruined the ticker with all the stats they toss across after each game score.

Berman can't even do his own shtick anymore. He stumbles over what he says and gets lost in the middle of it. Hopefully, ESPN replaces him with Wingo sooner rather than later (and kicks Jackson to curb as well).

I too haven't watched ESPN (at least in my tv, catching it at a restaraunt doesn't really count), I don't have it in my cable package because I can do without it. I don't think it has anything to do with a hipster mentality, just something that happens. It's not like I don't watch it to not watch it, I used to watch it a lot 10-15 years ago. Life has overtaken being as big a sports fan as I used to be.

When I was young I loved watching Berman, but now I can barely stand him. That said, replacing him with Suzy Kolber would be a disaster. Seriously, besides Joe Namath, does anyone like Kolber?
