We learned yesterday that the Chiefs had cut guard Marcus Reed, tight end Adam Schiltz, and cornerback Kenneth Penny. Adam Teicher of ESPN.com tweets that the team has also cut the following eight players, bringing their roster down to 79. Kansas City must be down to 75 players by Tuesday afternoon:

WR Kenny Cook
T Anthony Dima
LS Andrew East
CB Aaron Hester
DE Vaughn Martin
WR Jeret Smith
OL Charles Tuaau
WR L’Damian Washington

As Teicher adds in a separate tweet, East’s release indicates that the team has settled (for now, at least) on James Winchester as its long snapper. Winchester has never served as a long snapper in a regular season game.

Punt returns and kick returns are not the same.

A good punt returner needs to have some twitch, while a kick returner needs straight line speed.

DAT could handle kick return duties as well as punt returns, but there's no way Davis could be nearly as effective at punt return duties.

Davis has suspect hands which does not portend well for receiving punts. He'd be a total disaster back there. We'd be better off with NO return guy and just letting the ball go dead.

You have to track the ball while also making yourself aware of the bodies coming at you.

It really isn't as easy as the guys that do it pretty well make it look.

Darren Sproles led the NFL last season in punt return average with 12.97 per return for 20 or more returns.

DAT was fourth with 11.91.

Hammond, in limited opportunities, was pretty good.
