Evan Mathis: Released. Can we afford him?

Eagles release Evan Mathis

Evan Mathis didn’t get a new contract from the Eagles. He’ll now have a chance to get one elsewhere.

Per a league source, the Eagles have released the 11-year veteran only two days after word surfaced of his unhappiness with the team’s decision to rescind an offer from 2014 to pump up the back end of his contract.

A third-round pick of the Panthers in 2005, the 33-year-old Pro Bowler becomes a free agent. He can sign with any team.

Mathis joined the Eagles in 2011, qualifying for the Pro Bowl in each of the last two seasons. The move suggests that Eagles could find no trade partner for Mathis, who was under contract through 2016.

Mathis contends that the team offered an upgrade to his deal a year ago, and that the team pulled the offer from the table, explaining that, because Howie Roseman no longer is the General Manager, the offer is no longer valid.

Mathis had been due to make $5.5 million in 2015 and $6 million in 2016. The Eagles will take a cap charge of $1 million in each of the next two seasons, but they’ll avoid the $11.5 million in cash and cap space.

I don't know, Dane.

Adding a guy like Mathis to this line would be amazing and absolutely worth losing our backup quarterback for...especially when Aaron Murray is a skilled player in his own right.

Alex Smith performs much better with a stud OL and if we add Mathis, we would have exactly that.

I like Chase Daniel. I just don't like Chase Daniel at $3M.

Again, when did Chip Kelly morph into Pioli/Haley's child? Between him and the Phillies GM Amaro and whatever the sixers are doing Philly is cursed these days.
I'll take a seven year vet that beat a division rival in the verge of a playoff berth last year (and should have had a win the prior year) over two guys that have never even set foot on a NFL field during the regular season and never played four quarters in the preseason.

It's a recipe for disaster to cut or trade Daniel, especially behind an unsettled offensive line.

Personally, I don't see how or why he fits the 2015 Chiefs, especially since he's looking for a big payday.
"Big payday" is a hopeful scenario for him, but at his age he will be lucky to get a 2 year deal for 5m...which I'd be glad to offer him.

If the Chiefs are going to try and squeeze him onto the roster, they should talk to Alex Smith about a minor restructure.

Mathis could be to the offensive line what Maclin will be to the receiving corps...albeit on a shorter term.

To me, if we can get him, we absolutely should.

This team should be in win right now mode.

Mathis is at an age where he could break down at any moment and actually did breakdown last year.

He's not a right guard and with all of the resources Dorsey has used at that position (Fanaika, Morse and Fulton, not to mention Allen) he should stick to his plan.

So the Chiefs are 8-7 and fighting for their playoff lives in Week 17.

Alex Smith goes down before halftime.

You're gonna feel real good about putting in Murray or Bray I bet with Evan Goff at RG.

I'd feel just fine with Murray out there.

Fulton, Fanaika and Allen have shown to be nothing more than backup quality players. Morse has a chance to be good at center or right guard.

We are basically asking ourselves if it's worth 2-4m per over a 2 year deal to solidify the OL going into 2015...I say no doubt it's worth it.

No, absolutely, no.

Dorsey didn't trade for a two time Pro Bowler, give him a contract extension only to move him to the right side in favor of a 34 year old that could only play in nine games last season.

Mathis is a left guard, Fanaika is a right guard.

You seem to be clueless about the QB position.
