well, I haven't been on the Planet as much as I used to. It's been a busy month. I attended a Truck Driving school over the course of the past month and finished the school last Friday. After 15 years in telecom, I have had enough. Tired of the constant layoffs/project-based work....and actually grew to hate the actual work when it was there.

I have my Class A CDL test tomorrow morning at the DMV. I feel pretty confident. Others in my class who were at the same skill level as myself all passed their tests Monday and today. They all said that basically the 'tests' we were given at the school, were much more stringent than the DMV test - essentially, if you did well on the tests at school, you should have no problem at the DMV.

I've got a few pre-hire letters with companies; 2 of which will have me home every weekend. Another will have me home 3 days for 11 days out. My goal is to treat this upcoming year as an extension of my school/training, and try to get at least 12 months experience then start scouting 'local' jobs here in KC with a more predictable schedule, and hopefully decent hourly pay.

LOL, a little bit of the second option.

Have an in at a local company that hauls coal and other materials to St. Louis 2-3 times per day... home in my own bed every night and a solid check to go with it.

But I prolly dont even need that in, this places hires noobs all the time, a guy that graduated the class ahead of me just got on there and he doesnt know anyone.

Dayze, you might also consider beer distributors, coca-cola/pepsi and places like that, they're all day drivers... the only downside is having to haul the freight into stores, but if you'd trade a little money for being home every night those are all good bets.

They're all on my list if things fall through on option 1.

did you run with a lease option? I'm not interested in that route, but curious if that was a major hassle at the end of the day etc?

yeah, I had an application in for Pepsi as a relief driver. Haven't heard anything back yet. pay is shit until you're 'fully trained'...and they never really said how long that is. after that it's salary + commission with a target of around $45k.

*note - this is for a nOOb / new CDL holder; regarding the 'fully trained' comment

I use this approach to get extra rice in my burrito bowl at Chipotle.

I did go lease, and that was a mistake.

The only real benefit of being a lease operator is avoiding the NE. **** NYC. **** Massachusetts.
