The worst thing family does on holidays...

Just interested in things family, in-laws, friends do to meals on Thanksgiving holidays?

Is it packaged gravy mix? Boxed stuffing? Burned turkey?

I've got a few... my father-in-law goes all out. From scratch everything. Except he throws the turkey drippings down the sink and makes McCormick's packaged gravy.

But that's not even the worst. He microwaves his turkey. Not even kidding. It's horrifying. But to be fair, it doesn't taste as bad as it sounds.

My wife and I have been married almost 12 years, no kids. No questions about it either.

I'm fine with that.

You guys should do what I did when my MIL asked when she was going to be a Grandma at Thanksgiving two months after we were married. I stood up, unzipped my fly and told her daughter to get naked on the table. She didn't ask again.

Oh, here's a good one that my wife saved the day on regarding mashed potatoes.

Apparently my MIL was going down the list of items we were going to have for dinner and she planned on serving instant mashed potatoes. Their side of the family does this all the time, they think they taste just the same. And at a regular meal, nobody is going to complain, but not on a holiday folks. My wife flipped shit and told her that wasn't going to happen and she'd be bring an enormous pot of real mashed potatoes.

My wife was an instant potatoes sort of gal before she met me. When we first moved in together she tried to buy a box of that shit, and I told her they weren't an option.

My family asked me to make Green bean casserole this year. They are most assuredly expecting the can of soup/canned grean beans variety. I'm ready to see the looks of shock and disappointment on their faces when I roll out a scratch version of that shit.

My wife was actually sort of bummed I wasn't doing the soggy, soupy version and I just told her that I didn't like that stuff and if I'm going to make a dish for an important meal I'm going to put a little effort into it.

Old MIL trick to make you make the potatoes.

Hook, line, sinker.

I wish that was the case; but that's really what my wife grew up eating. I don't get it, mostly because we had a garden, cellar and way too many potatoes growing up. I don't think anyone ever made me instant potatoes in my life before I met her family.

Just serve a nice dinner of Carl Buddig turkey slices, instant mashed potatoes, canned green beans and canned cranberry sauce while you're at it.

I will brine the bird tonight, put it on the Egg in the morning. When it is cooked, I am done til it is time to make the gravy.

Other than that, put on the game on mute. Watch the game while pretending to listen to the nattering.
