View Poll Results: Would you swap our 2015 1st for a 2014 2nd?
Yes. I would trade with any team. 4 4.94%
Perhaps, depending on where the pick lies in the 2nd. I'm not terribly interested in taking Seattle's pick 16 19.75%
Probably not. I'd need to see who was available when we made the deal, but I'm leaning towards no 28 34.57%
No. Too risky. You have no clue where we'll pick or what kind of talent will be there 33 40.74%

Would you trade 2015's 1st rounder for a 2014 2nd round pick?

A lot of people (most vocally BossChief) are observing that because of all the underclassmen coming into this draft, there is a logjam of talent extending all the way from the middle of the 1st to the early 4th round. The Chiefs only have 2 picks in the top 100. Also, that is almost sure to figure into a somewhat lousy 2015 class.

Let's say the Chiefs make a deal with the 49ers to get their Alex Smith pick back in exchange for our 2015 1st. Picks at 23, 56, and 87 will allow us to potentially fill all of the remaining roster holes or pick up an incredible talent at a future position of need like CB, DL... hell, even QB.

The possibilities are endless in this scenario. Maybe Dorsey lands a trade down at 23 and picks up more picks. Or maybe a guy like Clinton-Dix or Beckham is available at 1. That 2nd round pick of ours now gives us the freedom to target our FS, passrusher (I'm a huge fan of Jeremiah Attaochu), or another bottom first round talent who is bound to fall into our laps in this deep class.

It gives us a ton more freedom at the top of the draft where we really need it. That's why I'd advocate for it.

EDIT: And as htismaqe pointed out, we've got a crap ton of comp picks in 2015 anyway. It's not like we're going to be starved for rookies or anything.

Poll forthcoming

Devils Advocate kind of a post here.

Wait a minute we all bitched about giving up the second second round pick which is coming out this year and now you want to upgrade that pick from a second this year to a first rounder next year. The final price for Alex Smith would then be a 2cd and a 1st.

Sorry just had to do it before someone did it in a serious manner.

I think it's more of a personality type. And he seems to me not to be the one to give up a first rd pick.

Don't misunderstand me, I'm not saying I wouldn't do it, I'm saying Dorsey won't. I would wait to see whose there on draft day if I were offered the deal. It seems this is the year to acquire picks, not next year.

Yep. Then we will have another year of bitching about not having another pick and this year a 1st instead of a 2nd. It's kinda like using a pay day loan service. At some point you just gotta stop so you got all of your own. Hence, the Redskins.
Another way of looking at it.
Cause you know...if you make that deal, there will be people saying, can we trade our 2nd and 3rd next year to get our 1st back? Then in '16 we won't have 2nd and 3rd rd picks....stop the madness. You just have to swallow the two 2's from the Smith deal and move on.

At very worst, the Seahawks are fluke that will never be duplicated.

At the very best, I don't feel like doing the research to show you that they didn't commit nearly as many resources to trades as the Chiefs already have in Alex Smith.

From what I can recall off the top of my head, the Seahawks haven't done anything even remotely close to trading away two 2nd-round picks for a player nearing 30...

I was about to propose that. Possibly yes though. It all depends on who is there.

My fear is that the more likely trade, due to inflated value in and of this years draft, would be our 23rd for their 44th and 75th in this year. I don't think that is something that is very appealing at all or that they would likely do.

Maybe that's why I didn't remember it.

EDIT: By the way, they traded for Harvin AFTER the core was built. We traded for Smith as the VERY FIRST THING they did. Big difference.

I don't think it was a high pick but they trade for Matt Flynn from the Packers and gave him a 3 yr 26 mill dollar deal and then traded him to the Raiders.

Pretty sure Flynn was a free agent when the Hawks signed him. They turned him around for a 5th rounder to the Raiders.

If Alex Smith plays like he did last year for the next 4 or 5 years, that trade was worth it.

We need some of the other picks in last years draft (namely Fisher, Commings and Kelce) to work out.

I agree with that, but only if they surround him with additional talent. They now have to hit on picks at an even higher rate solely because they traded away valued picks to get him.

Look, I don't hate the trade. It just doesn't make any sense to do it and then follow it up with "let's build slow through the draft" when you're already short draft picks. They should have been more active in free agency, bottom line.

2013 offseason by itself = fine. 2014 offseason by itself = also fine.

2013 + 2014 = no consistency, don't like it at all.

Absolutely. But I've been following this team since the early 80's. I know what happens when you put a lot of hope in guys like that.

It appears that Flynn was a FA. I was thinking that he was tendered for a low round pick.

Yeah, I think I might, with the caveat that we just can't get absolutely pantsed in the deal. Someone suggested trading back with the Rams for their two seconds this year. I like that idea as well, considering just how freaking stacked this draft is. But ultimately it would hinge on who was still available.
