I would like to hear from other fathers on here...do you find cruelty to children funny? I sure as hell don't.

So you are a father? If not, you need to S.T.F.U when grown folks are talking.

I'm a father. I have an infant at home. I also have a stillborn daughter who would be 5 this Sept 11th had she lived. She had Downs and her heart failed at 38.5 weeks. I find all kinds of stuff funny. I'm not even offended by Corky jokes. As long as you're not being intentionally cruel to those who are personally affected, I don't care. I think you'll see different responses when local news stories are posted. A lady fell out of a party bus in KC a few weeks back. She died. Most of our jokesters left that one alone because it's highly likely somebody on this board knew her or her family. Same weekend a limo caught fire in the bay area killing 3 or 4 bridesmaids. There were jokes all over that thread.

I have a 1-year-old son who has acid reflux due to his LES (valve separating your throat and stomach) not closing properly. For the first 9 months of his life he had to sleep at a 20°-30° angle. He's still on medication three times a day to control his reflux. When he was very young it was extremely difficult. As you can imagine, sleeping at an angle all the time is not very comfortable, and there would be very frequent waking in pain for my son. His sleep would be interrupted every 20 minutes to 1.5 hours at night, and he didn't take naps until he was 4 months old. As a parent caring for the child in that situation, you become exhausted and frustrated very quickly. If you get truly exhausted, you start to think and feel in ways that you probably never would have before. Fortunately, my wife and I were both already 30 years old and financially stable when we had our child. We had a strong relationship for ten years at that point and were able to rely on each other when things got tough. I can't imagine a situation where I was a young kid, not having been with my wife for very long, and under financial stresses having to take care of the child like this. I'm guessing they trade care shifts for the child with both working, which can be very difficult. We were mature enough and had the rest of our life together enough to where we could still put our frustrations into focus. But it isn't easy. It would only take one snap of will to ruin the lives of everyone in the family. Being a parent in some situations can be extremely difficult. As TinyEvil said, if you're not ready for it, wrap it up. |
