I might do the one in Tampa in Dec. Figured it would be a nice vacation from Omaha in the middle of winter.

Completed my second one Saturday here locally. My brother in law and I did really well, but it was a pretty tough course. One cool factoid is that Ravens coach Harbaugh and some of his staff ran this one.
But there were also numerous injuries and this tragedy. Interested to watch and see how this plays out. If it was indeed accidental then I see more focus on people watching and safety, but if it was preventable then it could get ugly even with the death waivers.

Tough Mudder participant dies in Va. hospital

GLENGARY, W.Va. —
An Ellicott City, Md., man died Sunday at a Virginia hospital after participating in the Tough Mudder endurance series in Berkeley County on Saturday, police said.

Avishek Sengupta, 28, was pronounced dead at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va., Berkeley County Sheriff’s Deputy Sgt. Ted Snyder said Monday.

Get the information you need fast. Sign up for our Breaking News alerts today.

An autopsy was to be conducted Monday, Snyder said.

Snyder said Sengupta’s death appears to have been an accident. The Sheriff's Office has found no indication of any criminal activity after speaking with several witnesses, Snyder said.

Sengupta had to be removed from a fairly deep pool at the “Walk the Plank” aquatic obstacle where it appears he was submerged for too long, according to Snyder.

The victim was treated by staff on site and responding medics and was revived at some point before he died on Sunday, Snyder said.

Sengupta was first taken to City Hospital in Martinsburg and then flown to Fairfax later in the afternoon, Snyder said.

The victim's sister notified Snyder of her brother's death about 8:30 p.m., Sunday.

“He was an active individual and kept himself in good shape,” Snyder said.

Sengupta was with a group of about six friends who joined thousands of others for the two-day event over the weekend at the Peacemaker National Training Center near the small community of Glengary.

“As organizers, we take our responsibility to provide a safe event to our participants very seriously,” said Will Dean, CEO of Tough Mudder in a news release. “Tough Mudder is devastated by this tragic accident.”

Sengupta was the first person to die in Tough Mudder since the first event was held in 2010, according to company spokesperson Ashley Pinakiewicz.

About 750,000 people have participated since then, Pinakiewicz said.

Authorities have said about 12 to 15 people were reported injured Saturday. A Berkeley County 911 emergency supervisor had said two people were feared drowned Saturday, but were resuscitated.

The supervisor said she did not believe there were as many injuries at the event on Sunday.

The course was built on about 500 acres of the 2,300 acres at Peacemaker National Training Center, a firearms training complex that was leased by Tough Mudder for its Mid-Atlantic regional event.

Walk the Plank was among 22 obstacles that had its own identity and names such as Mud Mile No. 1, Trench Warfare, Berlin Walls, Funky Monkey and, at the finish line, Electroshock Therapy.

To clear the Walk the Plank obstacle, participants climbed to the top of a platform, then plunged about 13 feet into the pool and swim to get out of it, Snyder said. The sheriff’s office said it examined the obstacle and surrounding site as part of the investigation.

Tough Mudder said Monday that safety is the organization’s top priority and that obstacles are tested and thoroughly inspected prior to each event in conjunction with local authorities and independent consultants.

The company also said it has fully trained medical staff on-site.

Tough Mudder said it will continue to cooperate in any capacity to the fullest extent possible with the Sheriff’s Office investigation.

Peacemaker National Training Center President Cole McCulloch said he went to the hospital when Sengupta was transported.

“My heart goes out to his family,” McCulloch said when told of Sengupta’s death.

McCulloch said they are now reviewing the circumstances surrounding the man’s death and have “a stern eye” on the obstacle involved.

Aside from the tragic situation, McCulloch said there is room for improvement, but was pleased with the event, especially after seeing the camaraderie on display among various groups of people and the wounded veterans the event supports.

Tough Mudder has said more than $5 million has been raised for the Wounded Warrior Project, which is a charity that supports veterans and service members who incurred injury on or after Sept. 11, 2001.

“I’m very much for it,” McCulloch said.

McCulloch signed a three-year contract to host Tough Mudder, but has an opt-out clause in the agreement.

The series is slated to return to the firearms training complex in October.

Wasn't sure if the death news warranted a new thread.

So you're supposed to jump into deep water with a bunch of other people jumping in on top of you, and one person died and two other people had to be resuscitated after near drownings? I hope the Tough Mudder people have good insurance, because they're about to be sued to Neptune and back.

You line up and jump off in a line, no one jumps on top on one another. Someone on top the platform tell you when to go.

I'm not sure how concrete they will be, but you sign away pretty much all your rights on their waivers.

If I'm the family of that guy, I'd argue that a waiver doesn't count if the course was designed dangerously. I'd also argue that there should have been someone watching the 13-foot deep pool as a lifeguard to see if the same number of people get out that jumped in.

There are rescue people on the sides and most times in the water with you. At least at this one and the other one I ran. Not sure what happened to this guy, but this is only the 2nd death since they started doing these and a TON of people have ran them. That's no solace for the family, but accidents do happen.

Step up to 12 miles and do Tough Mudder!

Actually I would like to try a Warrior Dash as well as a Spartan Race.

Here is a cool first person view of the course we ran on Saturday. Not my video.

Here is a video from 2011 Warrior Dash in KC. Not my video but you can see that you don't have to be in incredible shape to complete the course. It was insanely hot that day, over 100 if I remember correctly, but it was still incredibly fun to run the course with some friends. The Mudder looks a little intense for me.
