KC to get new 40-story Convention Hotel

Story says 23 but that appears to be the amount built on the lower base which is 17. Some estimate it'll be 30 stories. Either way check out the pics:

KC books 800-room downtown convention center hotel

Rob Roberts
Reporter-
Kansas City Business Journal

Kansas City is expected to get its long-awaited downtown convention headquarters hotel by 2018.

Burke Swerdling & Associates, led by Kansas City attorney and former Visit KC board member Mike Burke, plans to develop a $300 million, 800-room hotel. Hyatt will operate the hotel, to be just south of the Downtown Loop.

Bounded by Interstate 670 to the north, 16th street to the south, Baltimore Avenue to the east and Wyandotte Street to the west, the hotel would be immediately east of the Kansas City Convention Center's Grand Ballroom and adjacent to the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.

After losing the Kansas City mayoral election in 2011, Burke said he told Mayor Sly James: "This is something I'd like to work on. I think it's doable."
"He said, 'Go for it,'" Burke said.

The biggest hurdle was getting past the city's refusal to back bonds for the hotel, given the millions in debt repayment taxpayers have had to pick up as a result of the underperforming Kansas City Power & Light District.
City Manager Troy Schulte said the city’s contribution to the convention hotel will include $35 million to be financed by.....

Another stupid move. KC rolls on. Sly bought a grocery store for the hood last week. Now a shiny new motel, next we tear down the airport. And there is still no place to park downtown and even less any reason to go there.

Will it bring the big convention business back? That is the question.
If yes, great....if not, then not so great.

It's people like you that are restricting the imminent growth of Kansas City.

A decade or so ago, it was all the downtown baseball stadium bashers. It's anti-light rail crowd. It's blah, blah, blah.

Kansas City is a gem of a city but it could be so much more.

We agree. Its a super city run by the biggest collection of nitwits in history. Look at the waterfront.....its a shithole end to end, PNL was a flop that taxpayers will suffer under for years, they have the soon to be abandoned Kemper, a Huge Sprint center to attract a big time sports team and instead there is a semipro hockey team somewhere. Finding anything positive that KCMO Leadership has done in the last 20 years would be difficult

Yep there never anything happening downtown. That's why there's so much parking available. Oh wait...

To be fair there really is only one good spot for a stadium downtown and its now the performing arts center and the new hotel.

People that complain about parking should visit other metro areas.

Also, if you're going to drink, who cares?

Cab or Uber.

Eh I guess why not?...the more weird lookin' shit the better right?

The city has failed miserably w/ PnL. Nightlight and target audience can be a difficult thing to predict and I think the investors were way in over their heads in the whole deal. At least this idea has a more useful purpose and can attract large companies who will be able to generate revenue in this city.

The are endless parking lots downtown, that is NOT the best place to put a ballpark, the best location for a ballpark in KC would be the East Crossroads. A stadium there would be between all the parking, hotels and entertainment in Downtown, Crown Center and Crossroads yet there would still be room for some large surface lots for the dumb****s who will bitch about losing their precious, overrated and shitty tailgating, as well as a dedicated garage to the east of the stadium and access to the freeways would be much better via multiple routes. In either location, walking from hotels and condos and taking transit is an option that does not exist at the TSC which would greatly reduce the parking demand.

Oh and the Negro Leagues Museum isn't too far from this location either.

Can't link photos for some reason..

#4 on this map would be the best:
ryanwiksell.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/page-5-tracking-possible-hits600xx1481-990-276-77.jpg

Where the ballpark is photoshopped in this picture, is just a giant sea of parking...prime real estate for a ballpark to be built on top of it:
skylinescenes.com/e107_images/kcmodt.jpg

And KC would, hands down, have one of the best views in baseball at this location:

What's your big problem? No downtown Cracker Barrel? The Lawrence Welk revue never books the Sprint Center?
Would a downtown Matlock museum satisfy you?
