Chainsaw Question
I bought a "chainsaw" to assist me in cutting down a large bush that died over the winter. It had some pretty substantial branches that I didn't want to cut by hand, so I purchased a "chainsaw." It's just a 10 inch electric model:
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Remington...C983/203556953 I put oil in the little tank and went to town on the bush. Unfortunately, I didn't read that one has to manually press the oil button before each cut to lubricate the chain. So, the chain is now completely dull. I got a replacement chain that I think fits, but I'm not completely sure. Does anyone have any hints or tips on how to put the new chain on without issues? I have the manual (which I've now read...) and it looks pretty straightforward, but this thing gives me the creeps. The wife "suggested" that I pay someone to do this task, but I'm frugal and kind of wanted to try myself anyway. Obviously, she was right but I'm not going to let her know that. Thanks. |

I had no idea that you could use a chainsaw for vegetation. I've only seen them used to kill people (you know, on TV). But it makes sense that you could also use it for vegetation.

I was trimming trees beside a house with my chainsaw and hit the gas line that fed the gas meter for the house. Scared the hell out of me. I can't believe it didn't explode. My assumption is that the gas pressure was too great. The neighbors, fire department and police sure let me know that I was an idiot and incredibly lucky.

Lack of oil is not why the chain is dull. You probably hit dirt (the ground) or something not wood.
Lack of oil is just going to make it get hot between the bar and chain and smoke a lil bit. Anyhow just adjust the bar inward until the chain gets real loose. then remove the old one.......and slip the new chain on. Make sure its over the sprocket and then adjust the bar back out so it starts tightening up the chain....make sure that the chain goes properly into the bar and around the sprocket and just keep tightening. When its tight enough, You should be able to pull the chain out from the bar maybe 1/4 inch but not much more or its still too loose. Make sure the teeth are pointed the right way..you want the blade edge to do the work, not the ass end of it. (people put chains on backwards all the time) I dunno , cant think of anythign else but keep your saw out of the dirt and off of chain fences or however you dulled your blade.

Yes what dulls a blade is dirt and materials not timber. Evan a lot of sap or pitch can dull. Shrubery is usually very sappy and then chain gets in dirt and matters get worse
The friction from a unlubricated chain can warp the bar and cause misalignment of sprocket and bar ckucking the chain I surprised it didn't have a auto oiler.

I just picked up a Husqvarna the same way with Amazon Prime and have 5 trees to cut down in the foreseeable future. None of them are that big but I was tired of dealing with POS chain saws that only seem to last a year or two.
Donger if you learn how to sharpen a chain it's going to save you a lot of money. It's not hard, it just takes a latke time. It's something that can easily be done while enjoying a beer or two in the garage or out in the driveway.
