FWIW, Nelson took the 'first team' reps today in team drills, according to Adam Teicher.
This would have been different though had Gaines been able to participate in those. It looks like if we suited up and played today though, there likely wouldn't be any rookies starting. That could very well change obviously. |

They aren't going to cut him without giving him one last shot at proving that he's indispensable. This happens all the time with guys on the fringe. They're going to give him his last, best shot to establish himself. 90% likely that he's cut but this is a smart staff. They're not going to cut him without giving him a chance to show that they shouldn't. Burying him on the depth chart and then cutting him would be a Pioli/Crennel move. This regime is smarter than that.

But I'm guessing the 10 cent brain thing gets him in the end. |

It simply means its not a foregone conclusion. If anything I'd say it means that Murray has a better chance at the 53 man because they're pretty sure they know what they have in Murray and don't feel the need to rush him out there without pads/contact just to make sure he knows the playbook.

His feet at Tennessee were just garbage so it kept him from being able to throw the ball where he wanted to twice in a row. He simply couldn't maintain the kind consistent mechanics that he needed to in order to make accurate throws. He'd compensate for bad footwork, pick up a bad habit that worked, then 2 plays later his feet would do the right thing but his compensation would fire the ball wide or high or low. He spent his whole college career trying to throw to a strike zone that would essentially shift as he released. It's amazing to me that he managed to accomplish what little he did. The 'legitimate tools' you speak of are really just one thing - he throws the ball really !@#$ing hard. His touch isn't great, his accuracy isn't great. He doesn't have 'plus arm talent' because that connotes more than just a strong arm. He simply has/had a cannon and little else. Apart from the inability to read defense, he simply didn't have the repeatability in his delivery that would allow him to succeed. He's Ryan Mallett without the drug/alcohol problems. Eh...okay. He's worth sending out there with a better supporting cast to see if his feet are cooperating a little better or if he can run the offense, but I still don't expect much.

The only thing Bray showed that Murray didn't was a rocket arm.

I'm really excited to see what kind of front 4 groupings Sutton can create come this preseason. And of course by that I mean the season in general, but we'll get our first look come that home game against Seattle in August.
Once Houston is ready to roll, think about some of the multiple possible combos. Assuming Dee Ford makes some progress, or perhaps even another guy behind him, the possible groupings are endless, and they are all filled with beasts. Houston, Hali, Poe, Bailey, Howard, Jones, Ford.... should absolutely be the deepest pass rush in the NFL. |

Hali's unquestionably the least physically gifted player in that group and it's not even particularly close. Every other guy in that group can either point to freakish speed, freakish strength or some combination of the two that are virtually unheard of even among NFL athletes. That's the kind of skill-set that either gets a coach paid or gets him fired. There's no middle ground. If you can't get that group to rape faces, you need to seek alternate employment.

Ronald Leary, a guard whom the Cowboys gave a 2nd round tender, is requesting a trade.
Swap him for Knile Davis? |
