Yeah, the time to take advantage of the opportunity to groom and train a rookie QB is immediately, when the fans and ownership are still in love with you and the hire. Two years from now, if this team isn't back to 10 and 6, the fans will be screaming for their jobs. If they don't pick a QB tonight, forget about it. |

QB is about as much of a need as CB. People are saying need because they don't like Alex Smith. That's fine, but it doesn't make it a need. Even if they draft one, he'll be a developmental QB, that's not need.

So, they stay in the background, but emerge once a year on draft day and demand no quarterbacks are drafted? That sounds odd. Probably not at all true.

If you don't have a franchise QB it's the biggest need on your team. I don't care if you don't have a single starting caliber skill position player, DB, or pass rusher, the QB is the foundation that the rest of the team is built on.

Snyder and Jones are far too meddlesome. Hunt's problem isn't a laissez-faire approach, it's the organizational philosophy that treats the franchise as a business investment instead of a football team.
Clark didn't fire Pioli because of the team's record, he fired Pioli because it was affecting his bottom line. People didn't want to see a 2-14 team. Carl Peterson didn't stay around for 20 years because he was a good GM, he stayed around for 20 years because he knew the Kansas City market. He knew that if he dangled the carrot of mediocrity in front of Chiefs fans that they'd chase after it in perpetuity. The genius of this approach is that you can always stay good enough to avoid bottoming out, as you avoid the potential of a risky investment blowing up in your face. The foolishness of the approach is that it will never, ever win in the NFL, but that's not what the Hunts care about, at least it hasn't been in my lifetime.

You think he waits until draft day to tell him to get Alex Smith several months prior to the draft, because the Chiefs don't pick QBs in the first? |

You know, Jenkins, that's not a bad point. I suppose, though, you also only draft a qb if he is a franchise qb?

"What if he doesn't work out?" The same thing that happens when you get a retread. You fail. Draft one who does.

For some silly reason, none of them have been available at the Chiefs pick for the last 30 years, and none of them this year have that tattoo since the Chiefs are picking first. |

That was your point. Hunts don't interfere, except for when they interfere. So, yes, I was trying to be funny. I was mocking your point that the Hunts don't interfere and do interfere. |

There is. But it stops being a difference after 30 straight years of the same script. If anomalous behaviors keep happening, you may need to redefine your parameters.
