America Online, the dialup provider, is indeed dead. However the AOL brand includes The Huffington Post and Engadget, among others. The addition of Yahoo! brought YahooNews, YahooSports, and Tumblr.

Ad revenue alone is paying for the acquisitions and that doesn't even count the behind the scenes tech stuff that nobody actually knows about because it isn't consumer-facing.
