Malaysia Airlines loses contact with plane carrying 239 people

Malaysia Airlines says it has lost contact with a plane with 239 aboard enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

The airline said in a statement early Saturday it was attempting to locate the Boeing 777 after it lost contact with Subang Air Traffic Control at 2:40 a.m. It was scheduled to land in Beijing at 6:30 a.m.

China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported the plane was lost in airspace controlled by Vietnam, and did not make contact with Chinese air traffic controllers.

The plane is carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members. The airline said it is working with authorities to locate the plane.

Boeing said on its Twitter account it is monitoring the situation, and "our thoughts are with everyone on board."

I can tell you how long they would think about killing 230~ people vs saving a large populated area. About 1 second, then they would blow the ****er out of the sky, and very few people would second guess it.

Still haven't seen where this isn't plausible:

- Fire in the wheel well or front of plane at takeoff or shortly thereafter.

- Burns through the transponder 1 (located under the cockpit)

- Next burns through the communication gear (under cockpit)

- Next burns through computer/avionics links (under cockpit)

- The sudden lack of electrical/avionics causes sudden loss of control

- the regain attitude and altitude after a few minutes but are now way off course

- they use the waypoints nearby to try to get bearings

- they lose their way over the ocean and fly around until they run out of fuel with no way to be spotted and no way to communicate with anyone else because of earlier fire

- they crash into the ocean.

Not as sexy as a hijacking and hiding of a plane but if history in the Internet age has taught us anything it's that most of the time when the media latches onto something things like "the pilot HAD to have turned off the transponder" later become just one of many ways that type of equipment could fail. A slow moving fire could explain the timed failure of equipment, the loss of control, the inability to get on a proper course or find a way to communicate.

Too many perfect scenarios to happen. Why would they climb to 45,000 feet (approx 10000 feet above 777 ceiling) then back to 23000? Surely the passengers/pilots could use cell phones to call for help as a last resort.

To my knowledge cell phones rely on towers. No towers would be available over the ocean.

I still think the plane is out there somewhere. If the pilot was practicing low-level desert flying, that would argue that he was planning to sneak over India (which is a pretty desert-looking place if you haven't been there), sneak into Australia, or make it to Somalia or Pakistan over the water. I still think the latter two are his best options.

One doesn't simply sneak a Boeing into Australia.

They turned around and flew back over Malaysia 1.5 hours into the flight. I'm assuming that means they spent a total of 3 hours of the 8 hours over cell towers.
