2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread
2012 Slogan: Our Time
A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year (from Great Expectations) An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division (from alnorth) With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore. We do not have starting pitching. Oh yeah, we've also got this: Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us. Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here. What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that: Quote:

If I remember Guthrie had a decent year not to long ago in the AL (Baltimore?) ... Sanchez the same in the NL ...
Best case scenario for both teams is that a change of scenery back to AL for Guthrie and NL for Sanchez. Reaching I know. |

@buster_espn: In making the Jonathan Sanchez/Jeremy Guthrie trade, the Rockies save $1.1 million in salary.

Last guy we got from Colorado with better away vs. home splits turned out decent. All this really means is that we got a little more than a bag of peanuts for a guy we were going to release.

Guthrie's five years in Baltimore, he averaged a WAR of about 3. Luke's never been above 1. Take away Colorado, and this guy might be our best starting pitcher the rest of this season.

We got a guy who can keep us in a game and eat innings. From 2007 to 2011 with Baltimore, he pitched just over six innings per game on average with a FIP of 4.67 and an average annual warp of 0.84. Mediocre, sure. But what did you expect to get for Broxton?

Trade thought:
Royals get: Matt Garza and Paul Maholm from the Pirates Pirates get: Yordano Ventura, Cheslor Cuthbert, Louis Coleman, the 2013 compensation pick and David Lough. That's a lot to give up (And if you can do it without one of the three of Ventura/Cuthbert/pick, you try). But in return you get two pitchers controlled through 2013, both of whom are extension candidates. I think Garza is underrated by a lot of the Royals internet community (not so much here, but the Scout board for sure). He's an intense competitor who has pitched his heart out for the Cubs last year and this year, despite their suckitude. He's a good No. 3 pitcher with solid No. 2 upside, and he obviously instantly becomes the best Royals pitcher. And Maholm, while not a stud, is another solid starter who will be cheap in prospect cost and cheap in cost for 2013.

So we made a straight up trade that got rid of Sanchez and returned another starter? I will take that. Also as others have mentioned he has pitched decent and pitching in Colorado is not a good thing for most pitchers.
