Chiefsplanet’s (Proposed) 2017 Season Title: One Last Ride

Midish-Season Update (Royals 51-47, 2nd Wild Card, 1.5 GB of ALC):

We're halfway through 2017, and fittingly to the Chiefsplanet's 2017 Season Title, the Royals are all-in on what will likely be one final run with the current core. While many are worried the Royals will take a 2004 style tumble after this year, the farm system is hardly the barren wasteland it was during the Baird years. To see what's in the pipeline and what we have to look forward to, check out this exceptional list and analysis that Duncan put together of our system.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...htmlview#gid=0

While I had the honor of starting this thread this year, Duncan will always have a VIP pass to this OP, and can add more content at any time.

2017's Burning Questions Revisited:

1. What is the threshold between being “buyers” and “sellers” at the deadline?

We're buyers, baby.

In April, I argued that it would be a wise strategy for us to sell if we were 5 GB or worse, but that Dayton would likely add supplemental pieces for us to load up for another run if we were 1-2 GB. On July 24th, the Royals found themselves in sole possession of the 2nd wild card spot and 1.5 games back of the division. In April I said the Royals might pull the trigger on someone like Alex Cobb and resign Luke Hochevar, but since the Rays are also buyers and Luke's shoulder hasn't rebounded, this prediction hasn't come to fruition. Luckily, Dayton Moore again proved much more adept and creative than me by adding Trevor Cahill (good call, Duncan), Brandon Maurer and Ryan Buchter in a single trade. Giving us a solid starter to compete in 2017, and two relievers whom we will control through 2019 and 2021, respectively, keeping Moore's new vision through 2019-2020 intact. Moore has hinted that the Royals will continue to pursue the right deals if they're there, so the fun may not be over just yet. While we may not have the bullets to pull in a "star" like Cueto or Zo, Moore's adeptness may yet again net us what we need for another run in October.

2. Can Gordo and Moose bounce back to 2015 levels?

In April I asked if Gordo could at least set the table at a 265/325/425 clip and if Moose could deliver damage around a 265/335/500 clip for an entire year. This season Mr. Moustakas has been the prospect that was promised, delivering at a 277/307/568 clip as of this update. Gordo, on the other hand, has put up an unbelievably abysmal line thus far. But, if there is a silver lining, it's that Gordo has performed at a 246/311/432 line since June 1st, and if he can continue to perform near that mark, he will be more than a valuable asset at the bottom of the lineup while he continues to provide the best LF defense in the league.

3. Can Ned Yost manage a bullpen?

In April, I felt that despite the poor start, Royals bullpen would ultimately be "solid" this year, but the question was whether "solid" was good enough for Ned. I argued that the Royals needed Soria to bounce back and that Ned would need to start being strategic in his L/L and R/R matchups. While Ned has still made at times baffling and frustrating decisions with his starters (such as allowing Travis Wood to try to "get the win" and still insisting on sending Hammel out for the 6th, he's mostly done a good job).

MASH: Minor/Moylan - Alexander - Soria - Herrera (Credit to C3HIEF3S for the origins of the phrase) have cemented into reliable pieces, and now that Herrera is showing signs of stabilizing, our dumping of Wood, our call up Flynn, and the acquisition of Buchter and Maurer, the Royals have the potential to enter October with one of the best and deepest bullpens in the postseason.

4. Will the Royals find a boost from an unexpected X-Factor to lift them to contention?

Cool-Whit, Boni, Mike ****ing Minor, and Alexander have come up huge thus far. Cool Whit is, incredibly, is second on the team in WAR and has more than replaced Zo's presence on the team. They, like the X-Factors on the 2014-2015 teams, have been critical cogs as we've raced back to contention, while Cool-Whit and Boni also have provided a rosier outlook for this team's future. It's worth noting that Salvador Perez and Jason Vargas has been beasts on offense and the mound (along with Sal providing his customary defensive excellence), but I am still a bit wary of Salvy's annual Yost assisted offensive drought as the team moves into August, along with Vargy regressing to his averages.

5. Can Jorge Soler and Brandon Moss be productive contributors in Kauffman’s dimensions?

Ouch, no, but the Royals shift to power-hitting in the juiced ball era looks like one that will pay off. Thankfully, Moss is showing signs of entering his seasonal hot streak where he becomes corn-fed Jesus for a month, and we'll need him hot to keep up with Cleveland down the stretch. While Jorge has been painful to watch in the majors, his scorching performance in AAA should give one a bright hope for the future. While some may disagree, I offer Moose, Hos, Gordo, and Duffy's struggles as exhibit A for why it is far too early to give up on Soler's potential.

Bonus Question - Is Raul Mondesi truly ready to be an everyday player?

Ha! Not even close. However, like Soler, his progress in AAA is incredibly encouraging. With ceilings like Lindor and floors being Esky being thrown out there, it's hard not to be excited about his future.

The Picture Forward

There are many reasons to be excited, and not only for 2017. The Royals emergence of Cool Whit, Bonifacio, and Scott Alexander, and the fact that we have pieces like Salvador Perez, Danny Duffy, Kelvin Herrera, Jorge Soler, Ryan Buchter, Brandon Maurer Cheslor Cuthbert, and Raul Mondesi until at least 2019 should leave one feeling pretty optimistic. Re-up Moose or Hos (and heck, re-sign Dyson while we're at it), and suddenly this team looks very much like one that could compete for the indefinite future.

The Royals are all in again, buckle in and enjoy the ride.

April OP:

Spoiler!

Not yet. He tends to appear two days out of the year to say baseball is a terrible sport and how he never really was a fan or to lament that it's not a white man's game anymore. I'll be surprised if he sticks around much longer.

So no one here see the writing on the wall? We are likely to fall into another 30 year abiss of baseball futility. In 1985 i was 9 years old. 30 years later we win the world series forgive me for not watching much baseball for three decades. Honestly wheb i did start watching in 2013 for the first time in a long time i seen a team worth watching again. I have pretty much watched or listened to every game for the last 4 years. And 2017 looks like the end as much as 2013 looked like the beginning. For what? Can anyone honestly say that glass doesnt or didn't have the money to keep that 2015 team together completely. Would the 2015 team be competitive today? I dont want to hear we are a small market, so we have to suck for 30 years at a time. I dont accept that.

Everyone here saw the potential writing on the wall - it's even in the first post of the thread.

As you said before, bowling is clearly more exciting than baseball, a "sucky" and "dying" sport. Just watch bowling until the Royals are winning again - the wagon will have more than enough room when you return.

Was the team in the playoffs last year?

It was basically the exact same team, swapping Ryan Madson for Soria (which was a straight swap, Madson was bad, too).

Pre-Zobrist and Cueto, the Royals were on pace for 90+ wins and the best record in the AL, so you can't say it was just them, either.

2017 is certainly the end of this run/window, and that's been obvious since 2011-12. I've been saying that's the window since a year or two before that, that the question is what it looks like afterwards.

The Royals are a completely different organization now. They are not the Mickey Mouse operation they were before Moore got here. I don't know when the next great Royals team comes together, but there's no reason to expect it to be 30 years from now.

They have a legitimate structure for their farm system and spend in the draft and in Latin America.

There are legitimate pieces that will be around for several more years, and if they're out of it by the trade deadline, they'll make moves to bring in more legitimate pieces.

If there was a band wagon im sure i was one of the first on it. Who could blame me for turning on the t.v. or radio and hearing about another 100 loss season for thinking baseball was dead. It sure seemed that way. How could that much sucttiude not suck the life right out of the radio or tv. Somehow in 2013 i finnaly start listening to broadcast mainly due to stump the chumps being on the other sports channel. Which my opinion is th worst two hours of radio in the city. Anyway the same year 2013 my wife and I buy tickets and go to our first game together maybe the summer of 2014, and we are down in the game big time, she is not enjoying it at all. Such a terrible date but then all of sudden Lo cain steps up to the plate in the sixth inning and hits a grand slam. Then they annouce somebody just won 25 tbousand dollars. Not only that but 30 mins later we were on the kiss cam. I felt magic in that team that barely missed the play offs and made bets the subsquent year and won big. So forgive me for hating to see the magic start to fade. Your right i dont post alot. Been around here for along time, i only post if i have something important to say. Im not into mob mentality, i think for myself and am tired of hearing about how we are all of a sudden supposed to be a rbi team, when we never were. It misdirection in my oppinon from mangement and ownership to make excuses for screwing up a winning formula for the sake of profit.

This was a beautiful story and I truly enjoyed reading it. I would give you green if your rep was on. I remember that game well. In those days I was often pulling a double shifts in my college cafeteria but could see half of the TV from the front desk. Watching Cain-Kottaras go back to back, and then only for us to blow the lead again, only for Eric Hosaissancemer to roast a homerun to tie it... my, that game really did make it feel like the pieces are coming together.

Would you consider posting that story in a thread I'm working on for the Romper Room? (I'm going to try to claim that area as a space for OT Royals threads/discussion).

As for this,

I totally understand your thoughts here, but in 2010-2011, as the talk radio peeps were calling for Moore to be canned, Glass to sell the team to Cuban, and move Kauffman to downtown KCK, Chiefsplanet survived by watching 240p videos of Hosmer, Moose, Duffy and Myers in the minor leagues. Posters like Alnorth and Duncan_Idaho (whom you insulted), disagreed with the "talk-radio" consensus and made a case on CP about why there was much to hope for - coming on here and insulting someone who pretty much nailed the Royals run in 2011 isn't the best way to make a splash here.

I know you likely don't care, but this place hasn't been known for sharing the "mainstream" opinions of the talk radio peeps - and it's why you've had the visceral response you've had by going after some of our long time regulars.

You can post it, Im fine with it save for the big fingered typos. I was under the impression that my thoughts about this team were not main stream. My opinion that the outstanding bull pen is what sparked this team was my own. I do not watch or follow baseball much outside the royals, tigers, indians. It bothers the hell out of me to see Wade Davis go to the Cubs who just won the world series along with Zobrist and get the worn out excuse that we are a small market team, and we have to be homegrown. Why cant we pay players, there is no law against it. I know its profit driven but I do not want to here the Royals excuse of a crappy tv contract when viewership is down because they are loosing again by the time a new contract comes up for negotiation. Now is the time to put on our big boy pants, keep growing new royals fans. If we go back to we are to small to compete, and pay for good players or we will be stuck in another bad no money tv contract and repeat the cycle.

How come it never yields good power hitters??? talkin 30+ dingers a year with a decent avg, especially with the record breaking surplus of home runs hit around the league of recent years..

Willingness to spend money isn't an issue. The royals have carried a large payroll the past two years and have set a new record for payroll each year for the past several.

Wade Davis wasn't traded purely for financial reasons. He was traded to try to maximize return and cash in a short-lived resource while they still could. Of the guys pending free agency, he made the most sense to move.

At the end of the day, the major league club can carry/support a payroll in the 140-150 million range. That's plenty. But it can't afford to pay 6 guys 100-120 million of that.
