Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 21, 2013, 6:46 PM EDT
Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Nothing negative, just being realistic and honest about what I see. I'd love to be pleasantly surprised by them. I don't really have anything to gain from the team being bad.

well I was 100% sure this would be the board's demeanor after day 2

I think we have built a competitive roster with a competitive coach.

Do I think we are Super Bowl caliber? Nope.

but I don't see how this team is any worse than the team that the Ravens had last year...

all any team needs to do that is competitive is get hot, get some timely QB play, and get a few lucky bounces and that leads to some playoff wins.

the only gaping hole we have right now is one ILB

you can find that shit on the streets...

solid offensive line, game managing QB, #1 receiver, elite back, versatile TE's, good secondary, two good pass rushers, a few elite players

there is no reason this team, if it is well coached, can't win between 8-11 games

I know that doesn't get anyone hard on ChiefsPlanet but it's a step in the right direction and clearly...clearly...

there was no QB that Reid/Dorsey liked in this draft so I like the fact they didn't want to force another 2 win season down our throats and at least went out and got the best QB available

it cost a 2nd round pick

again

I'll do it again

go look at picks 30-40 the past 10 years and you'll find Alex Smith is more valuable than 75% of those players picked...

So I worked tonight and didn't have a chance to watch or follow the draft...

WTF is Albert still on this team? We couldn't swindle a single 2-3rd pick out of anyone for a top 15 arguably top 10 LT? Why have we been talking with the Dolphins for weeks like a high school couple and still no deal got done? Seems like a shitload of wasted effort and now we have two very highly paid LTs when we already have two probably serviceable RTs on the roster already?

3rd round picks also seem like stupid gambles, the TE seems like a dumbass and we have Moeaki's training room soulmate.

Not real stoked on the new regime at this point, already worried.

We were either going to overpay a LT top 3 money, or overdraft a guy at 1.1. We can still try to get a decent 2014 pick for Albert and use any cap savings to bring in a good free agent.

I'm shocked we haven't moved Albert either, but we still have plenty of time (including in mid-season) to move him. We'll see. The TE pick could be a very good one. The RB is one that most of us were disappointed with... but who knows.

The 2-14 Chiefs, that didn't really do much to significantly upgrade the team, are now just as good as the superbowl champions.

Dude, we spent the top pick to replace a good player at a position of importance. We followed that up by spending our next pick on a third tight end, when the other two are good enough to play good football with.

Then, to top it all of, we took an injury prone running back that fumbles about once a game....that is, when he's healthy.

Oh, ya...we also gave up double what any other team would to trade for Alex Smith, as it was reported that no other team was willing to part with two picks and we gave up 2 second rounders.

Let's not try and sugar coat this...

the 49ers were a terrible team when they had a terrible coach

a good coach came in and, with essentially the same roster Singletary had, took them to the conference championship game (with our QB) and was damn near close to advancing to the Super Bowl

so uh

yeah

we were the victims of HORRENDOUS, ALMOST ALL TIME BAD QB PLAY as well as HORRENDOUS, ALMOST ALL TIME BAD COACHING last year

there is no reason we aren't an 8-11 win team with this roster especially considering the favorable schedule

does that excite me? No. Not a ton.

but at least I'm realistic around draft time

I post drafts every year by the Packers, Ravens, etc...

and none of them are ever as impressive as the drafturbators try and make them look during draft weekend

it's hysterical

and like clock work

Look, I agree that Alex Smith is only good enough for a one-and-done playoff at best. But this is a significantly upgraded team from last year.

Versus what alternative? People would have been okay drafting a QB one round too high. And Kerce is not going to be a #3 tight end. Good chance he'll be #1. If not, he'll play a significant role in a 2 TE set, which Reid has used effectively many times (and no, Moeaki is not in the picture. Not compared to these 2 guys).

I'm not crazy about these moves. But I really could care less about the Alex Smith move if we find another QB eventually. And as for Kniles Davis... not a fan of that pick, but hell... it's just a low third rounder at this point.
