When I played sports, when I was losing I actually tried harder. Only time I let up was when we were beating the crap out of people. At the division 1 level, there probably are no games we ever see where a lack of effort are the cause of defeat.
Yeah, that was frustrating. Or when people started blaming it on some kind of supposed inherent flaw that last year's team had.

They didn't have any inherent flaw. Maybe they weren't as good as '07-08, but they were a great, balanced basketball team that got beat because they didn't play up to their potential at the right time. It happens to the best of teams, especially in one-game elimination format. If KU plays that UNI team in a Best of 7 series, they probably win in 5-6 games. But, of course, that's not the way the tournament works.

If you have to try even harder at the end of a game when you're losing, then you weren't giving it all from the very beginning. I know how it goes, man. Competitors usually do try harder when they are losing. I know I do. But I know that also means that somewhere along the way, either I or my teammates weren't doing as much as we could. Obviously, it is difficult to give 100% every minute of every game, and it would be unreasonable to expect as much. That is why we often give the team a pass when they are up by 20 and do something stupid. Bill doesn't give them as much leeway as we do, though.

When Tyshawn turns the ball over at KSU and just stands there looking for a call or with an exasperated look on his face and doesn't hustle back on defense, that is absolutely a lack of effort. It doesn't necessarily mean that the whole team isn't trying. But it doesn't take much to derail a winning team when there is a lot of parity.

The only inherent flaw I heard people talking about was a mental flaw, not a physical or talent flaw. And that mental flaw, to me and many other people, reared its ugly head at precisely the wrong time.

Mental flaw? They beat three great teams on the road (KSU in OT, and Mizzou and Texas in blowouts) and two other very good ones (A&M in a close one and Temple in a blowout), something this year's KU team hasn't done (or really hasn't had to do, because this year's conference is very much watered down). They were one of the mentally toughest teams I've seen this decade at KU. If we're going to accuse a team of having a mental flaw, it's got to be this year's team, not last year's.

And yet if this team goes further than the Sweet Sixteen (most people expect them to) KU fans will definitely rank this team better than last year's.

It sucks, but that's the reality of the tournament.

The reality of the tournament is that it's a luck-based crapshoot. It's pretty damn fun because of that, though.

In the Pitt-Louisville game Louisville converts a break away dunk with less than 1 second left giving them a 5 point lead. Some dumbass male cheerleader takes the ball and tosses it in the air drawing a Technical foul. Pitt made both free throws and just missed a desperation 3 with 00.05 left that would have won it.

The NCAA needs to get the fans under control. There's a place within the emotion of a game for fans to run out on the floor and celebrate, but my God wait until there is no time left.

I can't say I've ever seen a technical called on a cheerleader before.

Pitino might have had him whacked.

Well, I imagine that the Cheerleading coach is about to get bent over and spanked by the AD and Pitino. Then I imagine that the cheerleader himself is going to get some more of the same from the Cheerleading coach.

Outside of Laz (who seems to be overly critical of KU every year no matter what they're doing), I just don't remember anybody being down on last year's team at all, especially their mental toughness. In an effort to explain the seemingly unexplainable, though, it seems to me that people like to attribute greater reasons for losses after the fact.

I was only down on the fact that it felt to me like they tended to get too cocky and not really try to play until the 2nd half
