Malaysia Airlines loses contact with plane carrying 239 people

Malaysia Airlines says it has lost contact with a plane with 239 aboard enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

The airline said in a statement early Saturday it was attempting to locate the Boeing 777 after it lost contact with Subang Air Traffic Control at 2:40 a.m. It was scheduled to land in Beijing at 6:30 a.m.

China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported the plane was lost in airspace controlled by Vietnam, and did not make contact with Chinese air traffic controllers.

The plane is carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members. The airline said it is working with authorities to locate the plane.

Boeing said on its Twitter account it is monitoring the situation, and "our thoughts are with everyone on board."

Thats more plausible than being embarassed and not wanting to admit it even though it would be far worse when we inevitably find out you concealed it.

Still though, I come back to the pilots having any ties to terrorist groups. I really doubt they do. I don't think Malaysia has better background checks than the US, but we've had crazy pilots before. We've had pilots trying to get their family life insurance money or just flat-out go nuts. That is not weird or unheard of.

I'm not going to presume terrorist ties unless there is reason to believe it, Occam's razor tells me just plain old boring crazy.

We would have found out by now if the pilots had any link to terrorist groups. They probably did not, and if they didn't, then suicide is all thats left.

edit: changed "they" to "he", if its suicide, then I doubt both pilots are in on it.
Why wouldn't he/they have known about military radar? Don't we assume that every reasonably advanced country has military radar?

Cell phones require towers to work.

I'm with you. I think that scenario makes more sense than a really elaborate suicide.

There are no cell phone towers in the middle of the ocean. Maybe by the time they got close enough to land again, the passengers were dead.

Thats another data point in favor of going south and suicide though, a call wouldn't go out, but as soon as the plane was over land and near a tower, any saved texts would have gone out.

Yes but when they changed direction the flew back over Malay land at least that is the projected track I looked at. Maybe its just to remote in that area. I do know those countries are even more cell phone crazy than the USA.

It's possible they didn't even know what was up until it was too late. That's if the pilot is the guy behind it. They might not have known they were off course.

Another link saying that investigators are focusing south. Kazakhstan hasn't even been approached for help.

Quote:
Investigators largely discount the northern track theory because the nations along that route have robust air-defense radar systems, and no evidence has turned up that the rogue plane flew into that airspace, according to a person familiar with the probe who spoke on condition of not being named because of the sensitivity of the information.

You don't have to know exactly where military radars are to understand that they exist. I'm sure there are plenty of holes in that part of the world, and the revelation that India only operates theirs when the mood strikes is interesting, but I would think that you'd have to assume you were visible to military radar anytime you were in a relatively advanced country's airspace.

Let me try to understand this...the pilots stole the plane to fly it to another country?
What are they going to use the plane for?

They had no startup money for a new airline carrier so they just took a jet - Copperfield Airlines I believe
