I guess it depends on what you consider to be a "good" movie. It was funny, the actors were great, the story was fun, it gave us lots of quotable lines...plus I guess it IS nostolgic for me since I was 14 when it came out. I don't hate the actresses, I just think it's stupid to remake a movie that was by most accounts (box office) awesome. Remaking it in my view is basically saying, we can do this better than the original, and I'm not alone in that thought. I haven't seen it yet, I probably will, but not in the theaters. I just can't get excited about it because in my view, it's un-necessary.

...and it DOES smell like "hey, lets make Ghostbusters with women, just because they "deserve" it. There's no point in remaking it. It should have been like a continuation, a part three where these girls take over the mantle from the original Ghostbusters IMO. I would have been able to live with that.

Seems like it's only doing OK at the box office. I doubt it has staying power though. At the end of the day, it looks like it'll be a disappointment.

I'm generally not a fan of remaking an iconic film but I don't "hate" the fact that it was remade with women.

I mean, who cares? It's not as if the original will suddenly disappear from the world.

It's a bunch of nerds who have nothing better to do than to use social networking tools to hide behind. You know this

i wasn't the biggest fan at first but after I've seen more clips, it does look funny

Ultimately, I dont really care. It has zero effect on my everyday life. People need to relax. It's a shame how people were trolling Leslie Jones. A lot of that stuff crossed the line.

I went to the movies tonight with a friend. Ended up seeing BFG. Could have seen Ghostbusters. Chose BFG over it.

She really does play a trope in this movie, though.

And when the most public face of your movie pretty much calls anyone that doesn't like it a bunch of mysoginistic racists, aren't you kinda calling down the thunder anyway? Besides, let's not act like Jones just sat back like a wilting daisy here. I presume you saw the numerous screen caps of her emptying both barrels on several dozen people. Her response to the trolls only brought more of them, especially when she went roaring down the racist misogynist path herself (and pretty much went full on '**** whitey' there towards the end).

For me the casting was just tired. Wiig plays this same role in pretty much every movie now, doesn't she? Exasperated straight girl? I'm also firmly in the 'can't stand Melissa McCarthy' camp. She was funnyish in Spy but other than that, I've pretty much not found a single vehicle of hers that I liked. And as already noted, Leslie Jones played a stereotype. Maybe it's just my limited exposure to her on SNL, but it seems like she plays a stereotype in just about every skit on SNL as well. Kate McKinnon just looks like she's there to chew scenery and be some kind of bizarro 'manic pixie dream girl'. Perhaps I'm totally mis-reading it, but the over the top quirky character is just not in my wheelhouse.

They could have done something like putting together a script that had the 3 living Ghostbusters looking for help. That could have led to hiring 4 "incredibly brilliant and talented" females. They could have followed that up with the original 3 getting hurt/captured after a scene or two of them on the job, or just deciding that their hearts weren't in it anymore after the loss of Egon/Ramis, requiring the girls to take full command.

Just like that, the baton could have been passed with most people being happy. Instead, Feig decided to turn Ghostbusters into a feminist statement, and to antagonize anyone who didn't buy into his bullshit. I don't think any comediennes could have saved it at that point, because this was a self-inflicted wound that came from above the actors.

I stated early on in this thread that it was a horrible idea that was clearly a money grab because what worked about the original film was the chemistry between the actors. It could have been about race cars or football or golf (Oop!, Caddyshack already did that with the same people), etc. and it still would have been funny. The story was irrelevant.

As for Jones, I don't know how I would have handled that situation. I'd like to think that I'd just shut down my Twitter account immediately but she's a person and was angry, too. People calling her a gorilla and "The source of AIDS" (which is a pretty good one, actually) and so on set her off.

But it's a bad look by everyone involved, especially over a dopey movie that most people on this planet will never see.

Exactly. 100% agree.

I really enjoyed the reboot. It's flawed. There are some real cringe-worthy moments but it's a lot of fun and I'm sure will get better on repeated viewings.

But whether or not one likes the movie, it doesn't detract from the originals. Just like you said. The original doesn't disappear.
