Then you use it to sign Jones assuming he continues to improve his overall game.

If you're confident that the new CBA will yield a significant increase in the cap, the time to strike on a guy is now. But you have to also ensure that Jones and his reps aren't out there demanding figures that keep him at the top of the estimated 'new' market as well. That's exactly what Berry's people did and the problem wasn't that we tagged him the first time, it's that we lacked the fortitude to walk away when we should have. If a player's looking for long-term security but unwilling to also give back some of the money he could've made going year to year in the process, then you have little choice than to force him into the year to year situation and/or deal him. There's just nothing gained by tying your hands long-term to a contract figure that's going to keep the market set for several years. If you're not getting a discount, don't guarantee additional dollars.

The new CBA should expand money by a significant margin. If they get another game added, that will be huge for the league. Up to 3 more prime time games=more money to allot for cap space. The last few years the league has seen its cap go up to have a rise of roughly $10 million a year. After the CBA it might be $12-14 million in the coming years. Jones and Mahomes contracts will look like steals immediately when they sign them.

I guess that is the real question, do we think it's going to be a marginal increase or a significant increase?

Okay, I know the smart thing to do is to keep the best players regardless of position.
But are any of you really comfortable with letting BOTH of our starting CBs walk after this season? If they do, we'd be left with Charvarious Ward and a bag of dicks. And Ward may very well be just another dick that got outside the bag somehow. |

Neither of them are shutdown corners. They're both good players, however. I really don't want to go back to the days of Terrence Mitchell or Orlando Scandrick as one of my starting CBs
You're that confident Veach can find two players as good or better than them without blowing a billion dollars on a free agent? I suppose he could just trade another 1st round pick next draft and then extend them to a $100 million long term contract. It seems to be his thing |

Next years corner FA class looks good. Chris Harris Trae Waynes Kendall Fuller Bashaud Breeland Jimmy Smith Bradley Roby Logan Ryan Ronald Darby Aqib Talib Brandon Carr Byron Jones Eric Rowe Mackensie Alexander James Bradberry Artie Burns Joe Haden Jason Verrett Lot of guys who could be decent starters or fill depth, as a solid starter or reclamation project. Chris Harris Jr loves Pat. God how hilarious would that be to troll those ****ers?

You wouldn't theoretically pay Fuller an elite contract now. You'd pay him at a discounted rate, but guarantee he gets a nice payday that you'd hope he'd sign. Then he could outperform the contract.
If you wait until they show you (like Jones) then at best you get a guy that's just going to play to that contract. You aren't getting any surplus from it. |

It's a deal in line with his value right now. He wasn't elite last year. He cannot ask for elite money now. If he has a stellar year next year, which is a possibility, then his value can skyrocket. Of course if you pay him now in accordance with his value now and he is elite the next 3 years or so, you'll have to give him a raise but it will still have been good business (meaning a few years of Fuller outplaying his contract). |
