I think the show was hinting that the disease is starting to infect the whole planet. There was a lot of emphasis on the meat they're eating, the plants they're planting, and even showing ants feasting on dead bugs. The whole planet is becoming one big infection. Water too perhaps.

I actually enjoyed this part of the episode the most. It was creepy and kept me on edge waiting for the payoff. Although, I didn't think that Rick would allow himself to be conned by a stranger anymore.

I guess I mean that to me, it ended up being a waste of time. I was fine with it until the (lack of) payoff. Then I just thought, what was really the point of all that? That there are some kooks out there? We know that. Just seemed unnecessary and tacked on to fill time.
