Umpire recovering after being punched in the face at kids’ softball game

The t-shirt!

LAUREL, Miss. (WLBT/Gray News) – An umpire in Mississippi is recovering after being punched in the face following a softball game for 12-year-old children.

According to WLBT, Kristie Moore was filling in for an umpire who got sick. She has been calling games for 10 years.

During the game, the coach asked one of the athlete’s mothers to leave the game for excessive cursing. Instead of going home, the woman is accused of waiting to confront Moore after the game, punching her and then running away.

The mother, Kiara Thomas, was arrested and charged with simple assault.

Moore said some parents are out of control and make it harder and harder for umpires to do their jobs.

“It’s ridiculous,” she said. “The verbal abuse. And even now, the physical abuse now, at this point, and enough is enough.”

Moore, who finds umpires for tournaments in Mississippi, said it is difficult to find people willing to officiate the games.

“No one wants to listen to the verbal abuse and run the risk of what happened to me happening to them,” Moore explained.

Moore said most umpires do the job because they love the game and the kids, not for the money as they get paid $40 a game at most.

Was it church league or did the church just allow the community league to use their gym?

Imagine stalking and wanting to punch someone because they asked you to stop cursing in front of 12 year olds.

Man, we sure are letting our kids down in something that is supposed to be ....FUN FOR THEM.

Might be a good idea to have someone other than the umpire be in charge of evicting patrons that are not players or coaches on one of the teams.

Parents are stupid. They will go after anyone that is trying to correct this type of behavior.

Parents are also afraid of other parents on the same team.

A few years back I was reffing U16 boys Div1 soccer game at a local tournament. There was a parent on the local team that was screaming the entire game and was usually wrong with his interpretations of what was actually happening on the field.

In the second half he was still being stupid and ended up saying something inappropriate to a player on the opposing team.

I sent him to the parking lot and play did not resume until he was out of the complex. Time still running and his team was losing.

They ended up losing. Sideline was much more controlled. Both the team manager and the team head coach thanked me for getting rid of the parent as he is always an issue.

Why don't the team officials deal with their own parent issues? Oh, I know why. $

Well, maybe I am talking ideal world and you are in real world.

I think it would be great if you issue a straight red card to the spectator when evicting them and telling them they are automatically suspended for the next game just for the hell of it and to see what reaction you get from everyone.
