They don't teach accurate history. My youngest is in 9th grade and he is obsessed with European history. He is correcting his teacher daily on simple things like Mussolini preceding Hitler with the fascist movement. Or even when and why germany invaded various countries.

Her excuse has been that it is the info that has been provided for her to teach.

It’s pretty well documented that he wanted peace talks. The bombing of London was specifically designed to bring them to the peace table. It failed.

And the whole “Let’s invade Poland together” shit he had going with Stalin was to prevent all out war.

Pretty much the only thing I’d like to know, and it won’t come from him, is WTF did the raging anti-Semitic shit come from. I listened to an interview with Dan Carlin recently and he mentioned that prior to the 1930s he was a pretty average guy and then he went all fanatical.

I’m guessing he developed a mental illness, but that’s pure speculation. I’d be interested to know from an objective 3rd party WTF happened.

First, Hitler was heavily inspired by the air of German/European superiority in the 19th century. People like Wagner and Darwin were his "heroes".

Lastly, he needed a scapegoat to galvanize the people. We all know the history of European banking and laying blame for the economic issues post-WW1 on the Jews was low hanging fruit.

Besides that, he wasn’t a ****ing military genius. Some of his generals were, and the Wehrmacht was a well disciplined exemplary fighting force. But my GOD he did some dumb shit. Barbarossa was pretty much just hubris, and that lost the war. He thought he could scare the British to a cease fire without even dropping heavy ordinance. He believed he could overcome the lack of resources with military efficacy, while he sends fools through the meat grinder. Hell the Holocaust itself was a hell of a Military blunder. The German Jewish population fought in force and fought well in WWI and Hitler willingly just took that group out of commission in a war of attrition.

Every step he made gaffes and blunders that were made up for by military precision and discipline.

He wasn’t even that good of an administrator. He spent inordinate resources on chasing down dumb shit that he thought would make a difference. Like that damned howitzer on a train and shit.

Really all he was good at was playing up fanaticism, and playing England and France like a fiddle pre-war.

The Wehrmacht though. That shit was for real. I’m listening to a book about WWII and it briefly talked about the retreat from Italy after Italy folded like a cheap chair. The very few Wehrmacht soldiers there devastated the allied invading force by just executing superp rear guard actions. They mentioned the numbers but I don’t remember them.

It really was a superb fighting force. Led by a jackass.

His invasion of the Soviet Union likely cost him the war. But just around the end of the Soviet Union, there was a Soviet or Russian historian (Suvorov) who argued that Hitler’s invasion was not something he wanted but was prompted because Hitler rightly anticipated that Stalin would invade Germany. This theory was rejected for some time but after the collapse of the Soviet Union, many documents, including communications between the Soviet Ambassador to Germany and Stalin, were released that strongly support this theory.

This theory has gained some traction with the recent publication of Larry Meekin’s book Stalin’s War. Meekin does not really credit Suvorov but he does reach the same conclusion based upon a great deal of evidence, including the aforementioned communications. As one example, the majority of troops Stalin stationed on his Western border were paratroopers. Paratroopers are primarily offensive troops, not defensive troops, since they are dropped behind enemy lines with the intention of attacking the enemy from behind and disrupting supply lines and logistical support.

This does not make Hitler a genius, of course. But the typical answer has been that Hitler’s hubris made him go fight Stalin when the evidence instead suggests Hitler’s attack on Stalin was a desperate move to throw Stalin off balance and fight on offense rather than defense, which would have been much more difficult.

As an aside, the Soviet losses during WWII were astonishingly high. I read once that 80% of boys born in 1923 in the Soviet Union did not live to the age of 21. Don’t know if that’s true but that is an astonishing loss of life.
