Busting 4 myths about the Kansas City Chiefs defense
Busting 4 myths about the Kansas City Chiefs defense (it’s not all Bob Sutton)
https://www.arrowheadpride.com/2017/...all-bob-sutton Sometimes you hear something that you’re not sure is true, and you just shrug and move on with your life. At least, that’s what you do if you’re a healthy human being. If you’re not, you obsessively research until you’ve dug into the truth of the matter. Unfortunately for me (and perhaps fortunately for you), I fall into the latter camp. There’s a lot of talk about the defense right now, and deservedly so. After all, the pass defense looked quite poor against the Raiders merely a week after the run defense looked like a sieve against the Steelers. That’s... less than ideal. The Chiefs hung 30 on the Raiders but it wasn’t enough to win, and the defense wasn’t able to stop the Raiders from traveling 80 yards in under two minutes (well, with all the stoppages it was more like 20, but whatever) and scoring the game winning touchdown on Thursday. When stuff like that happens, people are going to talk. And that’s what has happened. A lot of talk about the defense against Oakland has been based around a few key points........ "Ultimately, Sutton has a few things he needs to improve (like the safety usage, Houston’s usage and the placement of the corners in relation to the line of scrimmage)."
7 games in and he hasn't figured this out yet? Seems like a pretty serious shortcoming for a tenured NFL defensive coordinator.

And who should the Chiefs have kept instead of Gaines?

7 games? He's been doing the same thing for years.

Lots of people thought that the Chiefs should upgrade the CB position this offseason. Apparently Sutton didn't think so or the GM would have gone out and picked up some options. Sutton has kept Gaines on his defense since 2014.

Yep. You are correct. But this season is the only one that's relevant right now, right? When you've jumped out to 5-0, you need to put your foot on the neck of the rest of the division (and the AFC).
The last two games were just miserable for the defense. And everyone knew what the other team was bringing offensively in those two games. Yes, the players need to shoulder most of the blame for these two losses. But a better performance from the defensive coaching staff could have provided another victory, if not two. If writers for local small media outlets want to suck up to this coaching staff, fine. But I'm not going to do it.

Like I said a couple weeks ago - Sutton is dealing with some serious personnel limitations right now and he's having to scheme pretty much perfectly on every play. Right now Nagy can make a soft playcall on offense and his players will simply out-execute and make it work.
If Sutton makes the right playcall, his players are still pretty likely to screw it up. And if he makes the wrong one, they damn sure aren't going to do anything to win a matchup and save the play anyway. Sutton's not having a perfect year but the problem is the players on the field. They simply aren't executing often enough and the breakdowns are too severe for any kind of credible offense to not take advantage of them.

That said, a staff that was able to get several productive players in the 4th round and later on offense sure as hell seems to be worse at finding similar value on defense; there's little denying that. The defensive personnel needs an upgrade in a big way. Whether thats internal or not remains to be seen, but it would be hard for Buddy Ryan, Dick LeBeau or [insert your defensive wizard of choice here] to have a ton of success with these guys playing the way they are.

No. It's the GM's call or the HC. Sutton is a D-coordinator. All he can do is make suggestions.

I'm pretty sure Al Harris and Emmitt Thomas are allowed to dictate to the general manager, Andy Reid and Bob Sutton who they put in their secondary. I mean, it's pretty common that subordinates get to choose what they get to work with, right?

When you call bracket coverage on a guy and he STILL gets open 20 yards downfield in 2.5 seconds, no scheme is going to fix that. Players have to play. Sutton has been viewed as a quality coach because his players have always made plays. Now they aren't.

I think it's playcall more than Alex. Either way, missed opportunity to put it away. |

The fact that Gaines has logged 74% of the defensive snap counts and Acker has logged 2.9%, while DJ White has been inactive all year, speaks volumes about the Chiefs cornerback situation.
It's really difficult for me to believe that De'Vante Bausby wouldn't be playing better than any of these guys. |
