Honest car question

Considering buying a used BMW, I've driven several and love how they feel and all the features they have. I've read the motors are suppose to last a really long time.

Was just curious if anyone here has any long term experience and if the things I've read about them easily making it over 300k miles are the truth.

Heh.

Kinda reminds me of a story from several years ago. I have a Firebird that's all murdered out like Red's beamer. It's lowered, custom hood etc.

One day i got pulled over by a cop for having tinted windows and he starts asking me about the car. I mention that i work on classic Mustangs for a living and he says to me,

"Oh yeah, where at?"

Me: "xxxxxx"

Him: "Oh shit, i just bought a "xxxx" off you guys! When will it be ready?!"

Me: "uhhhh"

Him: (turns to his partner) "Hey man, this guy works at that shop i was telling you about! Yeah he's cool man, don't worry about it".

Me: "uh, thanks bro. I'll check on that part as soon as i get to work and I'll give you a call..."

Ha ha - never, I don't drive fast anymore, really. It was more tempting when I had the 335's which were tuned twin-turbos. The pickup in them was uncanny and you could really feel the torque.

This one is a 6 speed manual v8 w/ 440 horse. Not nearly as tempting, plus I'm getting old.

I have a 2009 328i that I have not had any problems with. Get the service done at the BMW dealer which is a little higher price than my Ford but hell they make fresh cookies while you are waiting at BMW. Not sure about going used though, I bought mine new. It's a crap shoot with any manufacturer buying used.

Oddly (unlike the Audi's I'd owned) - it's generally very minor stuff such as turn signal bulbs blowing and annoying things like that. Aside from the pricey oil changes, things aren't too rough. I always had worse problems w/ the two Audi's I had.

Here's my little girl (which most of you have seen in the cars thread):

I got talked out of buying a 2012 M3 due to reading about the following two issues:

Common rod bearing failures require proactive replacement at 60k (a major repair)

Common throttle actuator failure

Have you encountered any of those issues? I REALLY liked that car and I still want one.

I have not, no. Thank God. But no, I don't drive a ton though. Maybe 250 miles a week on average.

I've owned 8 BMW's and loved them all. From older classics to newer ones--3, 5, and M-series'. I'd suggest buying a warranty. The $2,500 or so you'll spend on the warranty should provide peace of mind for years and save tons of money. They're great cars, but pricey to fix when things go wrong. The most expensive issue I've ever dealt with was the replacement of both turbos on a 335. It would've been $7k out of pocket, but with our warranty we only dropped $100 on the deductible.

It's like you're not as thirsty for it, after so many runs. I do go fast entering a freeway or something like that. But no, now I think a little more practical. This is my last stop on vehicles for a long time. I need it to last.

If it would have been white or black I would have gone through with it

I just couldn't bring myself to pay that much for a used out of warranty car that I would soon have to sink more money on.

My wife is back wanting a larger car again, which frightens me. She's got access to an Acura crossover right now that her elderly dad owns, and he's likely not going to be a driver in the future. She's making noises about selling the BMW and just taking over the Acura. It's a very nice vehicle, but man oh man, I haven't owned a back seat in 20 years on my main driver.
