Berry hopeful for a long-term deal, unwilling to play on tag

Quote:
Safety Eric Berry said he was hopeful he could come to an agreement on a long-term contract with the Chiefs before Wednesday's deadline for teams to designate franchise players. "I'm just being patient because you never know . . . I'm not getting my hopes up," Berry said. Berry said he hasn't changed his earlier stance that he wouldn't play with the Chiefs for the second straight season on the franchise tag. "I still stand by that," Berry said.

The Chiefs likely aren't going to part ways with Houston anytime soon, so they could convert almost all of his like 16 million base into a SB. After this year they can do a lot of cost-cutting.

They'll get a deal done. He's the type of player the Chiefs have historically made long term commitments to.

Not without some posturing and not without CP on suicide watch, but I'm guessing a deal will get done before the season.

The smartest thing KC can do with Berry is transition tag him. See what he can get on the open market and decide to give him true market value or let him walk if it's too much...but that's fair to Berry and the team.

If KC franchise tags Berry, that 13m goes on the books -in full- the moment he's tagged. That would hurt a team that's so close to the cap, like KC.

It would severely limit what the team can do at other positions...especially if Berry sticks to his word and sits out.

If he's not going to play under the franchise tag, he's not going to play under the transition tag either.

You don't play under a transition tag. It just gives your team rights to first refusal if you get a contract offer.

What do you mean?

The transition tag means Berry is basically an unrestricted free agent thats free to negotiate with all 32 teams.

Once he agrees to a contract with another team, KC has 7 days for the right to sign Eric to that exact contract or to let him walk and get no compensation.

It's basically a "right of first refusal".

But it's taking leverage away from him that he would have if he were a UFA, isn't it? I don't see any reason why he would negotiate with other teams at all. Why couldn't he just say he's holding out regardless unless he gets the deal he wants?

How many times has it been used in recent years, and the original team retained the player in the end?

The a Broncos used it on CJ Anderson last offseason and it helped them sign him long term.

The transition Tag would be good for Berry. For the Chiefs I think not so much.
