Considering a vacation to Atlanta

The kiddo may or may not be coming with us.

Just wondering what to make sure to do while we're there. We decided on Atlanta because neither of us has been there, and it is home of the largest aquarium in the US. Other than that, I'm not for sure what it's known for as far as tourist attractions. I'm commencing Google searches, but I'd just thought I'd also see if anyone on here who either lives there or has been there can suggest some things. Thinking July or August.

Just in case we take the kiddo, he will be 16-18 months at the time of the trip. If you list something, please say whether it would be appropriate (or geared towards) children.

Thanks!

Not an insult, but I don't think you're well traveled, right? Don't travel to Atlanta as a vacation destination. There are many other great places to visit.

If it has to be a July/August trip, hit the west coast or Rocky Mountain states for the most perfect weather you can find!

Was in ATL one October for a conference. As was mentioned, the Aquarium is pretty sweet, but I really struggled there. Go to Charleston or hell Nashville. Anything but the ATL

If you go to Atlanta, check out the College Football Hall of Fame. It is really fun... There is a lot to do in there.

Stone Mountain, World of Coke, and the Aquarium are cool. Six Flags, White Water, the zoo, Midevil Times and Fernbank are all fun for the kids. The Braves have a new stadium opening this spring and there is an Andretti Speedway if you are into racing and go carts. The Falcons and Atlanta United (MLS) will open a new stadium this year too that includes a 100 yard bar!

Chattanooga is only an hour and a half away from ATL. They have a kids museum and a good aquarium too. Rock City, Lookout Mountain, Chattanooga Choo Choo, and Ruby Falls are all there.

Savannah is three and a half hours away. It's like mini New Orleans and there is a beach ten minutes away at Tybee Island. Lots of alligators to see down there too.

Atlanta and Chattanooga are good tourist spots if you have kids. Savannah is awesome for couples and ok for kids.

I live in Georgia so if you have any questions I can probably help.

I was kinda thinking the same thing, and I have family down there.
Lots of neat natural places out west, and certainly nicer cities east and west.
Shit, go to NYC.

You can take a nice vacation.
You can go to Atlanta.
You can't do both.

Braves game. They have a new stadium. THIS WILL BE AWESOME

There's a underground mall downtown that I wasn't really all that impressed with but was told it was a "must do" STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS UNLESS YOU WANT TO DIE

There's a hotdog place called the Varsity famous for chilidogs. ATLANTA HAS GREAT FOOD, GO HERE IF YOU NEED TO SHIT AND ARE OK DOING IT WITH SOMEONE WATCHING

If you stay downtown be prepared for more people asking for change than you can imagine. I've been there a few times and it's always the same as far as that goes. A lot of "can you spare a .........?" So just be ready. SHITLOADS OF PANHANDLERS DOWNTOWN
Atlanta is a great town. It will be hot as shit here then, I'd look at going north of town into the mountains, Piedmont Park is cool in the city. And if you love food this is a world class spot to get it.

Centennial Olympic park area has a ferris wheel and the CNN Center, which is pretty cool. Otherwise I'd focus on Buckhead or Midtown if you're in the city.

I'll be the contrarian, if it's a place you want to visit, go visit. But I like getting out and seeing areas of the country I've never seen before. I'd much rather do that than spend every summer making an annual trip to the same beach.

Now if you can only afford to take a long distance trip once every 10 years, then maybe I'd suggest somewhere else. It's kind of like Houston in that it's a big city that's more of a business center than vacation destination. It's definitely not a complete concrete jungle though. It has way more trees than most major cities. More restaurants than you could ever try. You would probably have a nice time at the aquarium and the Coke museum.

If you did want to travel out of the city, there are a lot of things in the mountains a couple hours north. Off to the east, Charleston and Savannah are nice, certainly more traditionally "southern"... but that's a little bit of a drive too. Depends on if you like the beach or the mountains. If you like mountains, both Chattanooga and Asheville are closer. Chattanooga has Rock City, Lookout Mountain, a nice aquarium too... Asheville has the Biltmore, which I bet you'd like... and the Blue Ridge Mountains are all around. Beautiful area of the country.

I liked the Chattanooga aquarium better than the Atlanta one.

Louisville is a cool spot to visit and a little closer than Atlanta if you are driving. The bourbon trail is a lot of fun as is the Louisville Slugger factory, Muhammad Ali museum, Churchill Downs and a lot of other cool stuff.
