Montessori Schools Yes, No, Maybe?

My 2yr old son currently is being babysat by our neighbor across the street. She has her own 2 kids, 8 & 4, plus she watches another 4 yr old 2-3 times a week. She is a nurse by trade as well and has a very clean and safe area for my Son. Obviously the problem with home care like that is you have to work around their schedules to a point and you don't quite get the group interaction and structure of a formal childcare establishment.

My Dad wants us to send him to a Montesorri school and of course to sweeten the deal he said he will pay half of the costs.

I am not sure about it. While I would like my Son to interact with more kids, I don't think you can beat the 1-1 care we are getting now. Especially as he is still learning how to tell you when he doesn't feel good, etc.

any thoughts?

My daughter went to a Montessori school from 3-5 years of age and loved it. We were able to make our own schedule that worked for us, she made friends with some kids there, and she loved going there. She learned at her own pace, and now runs mental laps around the public school kids that are her age.

I'd go for it. If your dad is helping with the tab, then absolutely.

My wife and I just went and checked out a daycare where she works in Platte City this afternoon. $257/week for an infant. I guess that's a reasonable rate for somebody to watch your kid nine hours a day, but holy **** that's going to hurt the bank account.

There is a Montessori school in Platte City, but apparently they don't accept children under 18 months so they aren't in our consideration just yet.

Being an adult is expensive. This whole buying a house and a baby on the way within a year is knocking my fun money down at an amazing pace.

If it doesn't, remind them that you may one day be their guardian and you could put them in the shittiest of nursing homes with Nurse Helga tormenting them for the rest of their awful lives.

Just a joke of course.. or maybe..

Yeah, that wouldn't work with my Dad. He wanted my Son into swimming lessons at 3 months. He wants him in this Montessori school to "further his education". I'm like, Dad, he just turned 2, literally a month ago.

A colleague told me today that they did all this early schooling and when their kid finally got to Kindergarten he was board and they had problems because he had already learned a lot of the stuff. Seems to be a balance there you have to maintain.

I think it is hilarious when you act like you are a real parent and try to give advice.

Pretend parent is pretend.

I have friends that try to do the uber-parent bullshit like this too.

They're only kids once. There is no reason to rush to have them prepared like little machines by the time they hit kindergarten.

Yes, that's the thing about Montessori - it's definitely at the child's own pace.

I thought that's why they did pre-testing for public school placement?? If the child was too advanced for Kindergarten...wouldn't that be a major vote for Montessori??

I'd say that's a failure on the public school system.

Seems like a good way to shut your dad up while giving your child a great opportunity to flourish.

Maybe when my Son can actually tell you what's going on. Right now he couldn't tell you if he was being mistreated or not. Maybe I am being overly sensitive but my child's safety is #1 above all else.

If this were me, this would be all I need to justify keeping him there. Not trying to downplay what a Montessori could potentially mean or do for your son, but sometimes a person can overthink a situation.

Socialization is more important than the schooling, IMO.

But as far as "overlapping", I don't really see a problem with it.

Our situation is completely different because my daughter (and youngest will when she's five) attends a Charter School that teaches Project Based Learning, which is completely different than the old 'Reading, Writing, Arithmetic' way of schooling.
