News Secret Nazi Treasure Train May Have Been Found, Polish Official Says - Page 3

It has all the makings of an Indiana Jones sequel: In the final days of World War II as the Soviet army closed in on the Third Reich from the east, a train full of gold, gems and other Nazi loot was hidden in a secret underground tunnel near the present-day Polish city of Walbrzych. Seventy years later, a deathbed confession may provide the key clue to finding it. In an extraordinary news conference Friday, Poland's Deputy Culture Minister Piotr Zuchowski said authorities were led to a spot by an unnamed individual and that images obtained from ground-penetrating radar have left him "99 percent convinced" that the treasure train has been located. Zuchowski called it an "exceptional" discovery, according to The Telegraph. "The train is 100 meters long and is protected," he said. "The fact that it is armored indicates it has a special cargo," he said, but added: "We do not know what is inside the train. ... Probably military equipment but also possibly jewelry, works of art and archive documents."

The BBC reports that Zuchowski said the information about the train's location came "in a deathbed confession from a person involved in concealing it." He also issued an appeal "for any further investigations to be put on hold until we have finished the necessary official procedures relating to securing the site."

As the Daily Beast notes:

"The buzz began this month when two unidentified men, a Pole and a German, claimed to have found the storied train. They contacted authorities in Wałbrzych via a law firm, but refused to reveal the train's exact location until they were guaranteed 10 percent of the value of what's inside. "The news struck a chord with many others who have long sought to find the train. With its complex network underground of tunnels designed by the Nazis, the surrounding hills of Lower Silesia have plenty of space to hide a train—even one 100 meters long."

Although Zuchowski would not reveal the location of the find, he said he "personally hoped that it would bring to light looted art and Nazi archives," the BBC reports, adding that he "also reiterated warnings to treasure hunters that it may be booby-trapped." The mayor of Walbrzych, Zygmunt Nowaczyk, said the find was "within our administrative boundaries" but that "I cannot of course reveal the exact place."

The number fixation is because there had been other "Six Million Jews" genocide propaganda stories circulated before the death camps. As I recall the number of Jews killed in the Nazi death camps is most likely nowhere near six million. That doesn't really make it any better to me though, and there were people other than Jews that were sent to those camps.

Holocaust denial is really stupid.

Hell, we have the Pilecki report which is a first hand accounting of what exactly was happening in Auschwitz. Witold Pilecki was a Polish resistance leader that assumed a Jewish identity to be sent to Auschwitz to see if he could gin up a rebellion from within the prison, he didn't know it was a death camp before he went in. His reports were being sent to London by at least 1942. He broke out after the original plan by the Polish Home Army to liberate Auschwitz fell through.

He was later executed by the communists after the war for reporting on the Soviet atrocities and prosecution of former Polish Home Army members.

The way the 6 million number was estimated was by Nazi records on the number of people sent to death camps as well as demographic studies of the number of Jews in Europe before and after the war.

What both of these fail to account for is: there was a very large number of Arabs and Gypsies murdered in these camps as well (also thrown into the mass graves), and well over a million Jews fled Europe during the war and never returned. The 6 million estimate doesn't take either into account.

There's nothing to gain by disputing the 6 million number other than wanting historical accuracy. After taking into account the people other than Jews that were exterminated and the number of Jewish refugees the number most agree on is closer to 3.5-4 million Jews. Still an atrocity for sure.

Yup. I completely agree. The number itself isn't really important once there are so many killed. It's mind numbing.
