Evan Mathis: Released. Can we afford him?

Eagles release Evan Mathis
Posted by Mike Florio on June 11, 2015, 3:56 PM EDT
Detroit Lions v Philadelphia Eagles Getty Images

Evan Mathis didn’t get a new contract from the Eagles. He’ll now have a chance to get one elsewhere.

Per a league source, the Eagles have released the 11-year veteran only two days after word surfaced of his unhappiness with the team’s decision to rescind an offer from 2014 to pump up the back end of his contract.

A third-round pick of the Panthers in 2005, the 33-year-old Pro Bowler becomes a free agent. He can sign with any team.

Mathis joined the Eagles in 2011, qualifying for the Pro Bowl in each of the last two seasons. The move suggests that Eagles could find no trade partner for Mathis, who was under contract through 2016.

Mathis contends that the team offered an upgrade to his deal a year ago, and that the team pulled the offer from the table, explaining that, because Howie Roseman no longer is the General Manager, the offer is no longer valid.

Mathis had been due to make $5.5 million in 2015 and $6 million in 2016. The Eagles will take a cap charge of $1 million in each of the next two seasons, but they’ll avoid the $11.5 million in cash and cap space.

I'll never understand Chiefsplanet.
I don't like the college Daniel played for, so he must be worthless. Never mind his record filling in adequately as a backup QB is supposed to do.

This is it, this is the year. If something happens to Smith, people want Aaron Murray to be the starter? Wha?
If Smith gets hurt we aren't doing shit anyway.

why waste that much money on going .500?

Because not all injuries are season-ending, but putting Bray or Murray in for 3 or 4 games might be?

34 years of age is reeeally pushing it, and no... we cant afford him, and shouldn't afford him... he's just entirely too old.

But if someone of comparable skill and 2-3 years younger came along after camp cuts? hell yes, let Chase Daniel go in order to make it happen... I've already made my argument against Daniel, so wont go too much further into it.

But this guy is NOT the future of The Kansas City Chiefs by any stretch of the imagination... so why the hell waste the money and roster spot on him when we have a guy like Murray? A proven winner in probably the toughest college conference who only fell due to injury.

It makes absolutely no sense to me to let this expensive placeholder gobble up money and the critical reps that need to go to our supposed future... Chase Daniel is a Dead End in Kansas City, the only reasonable option is to turn around and get out of there.

The Chiefs would need $2m of cap space to even consider signing Mathis.
He's still one of the two or three best guards in the league, but he'll be 34 in-season, has spent most of his time at left guard (where Grubbs will play), and we have money and draft picks already tied up in the position.

I'd prefer they kicked the tires on James Jones, Jermaine Gresham, and/or Tim Wright (if he clears waivers). I think a combination of Jones and either Gresham or Wright would make this a Top 5-7 offense in the conference.

Pretty sure Mathis has played right guard

When smith goes down what's better Hey never will be the quarterback or a gaping hole the size of the Mississippi River for Jamaal Charles to run through?

You're joking, right?

Chase Daniel is a BACKUP QB. He's not a QBOTF, he's not a Developmental QB, he's a guy that's expected to win games when the starter is injured.

Look around the league: Daniel would be battling for a starting gig in places like Cleveland, Buffalo and the Jets. He's certainly a more capable backup than Charlie Whitehurst or Bruce Gradkowski or Drew Stanton or countless others.

If Mathis finds a soft market he could conceivably sign here.

I like Chase Daniel. I just don't like Chase Daniel at $3M.

Again, when did Chip Kelly morph into Pioli/Haley's child? Between him and the Phillies GM Amaro and whatever the sixers are doing Philly is cursed these days.

I don't know Dane, if it's only a 1 or 2 year deal, I'd much rather have a badass guard than one year of a backup quarterback.

Murray can't be all that far behind Chase, Mathis is a difference making guard that knows the system and would bring a big time presence to the locker room.

Fisher
Mathis
Morse
Grubbs
Allen/Stephenson

I'd feel a **** ton better about our OL if we added a monster like Mathis to it.

He'll be 34 years old in November, he missed seven games last year due to a sprained MCL and he's a left guard, not a right guard.

Personally, I don't see how or why he fits the 2015 Chiefs, especially since he's looking for a big payday.

Our shitty tackles are still gonna be shitty with or without Evan Goff.

This is a bad line.
