Chiefs Houston question - Page 3

I know....not another thread about Houston right? However, I didn't want this to get buried in the mega-thread. Besides, there has been so much blame being tossed in the direction of the organization based on assumptions that I thought it prudent to try to spell out what we know and don't know:

At this point all we know is that:

1. The Chiefs and Houston's agent have not agreed on a deal.
2. Houston has been given the non-exclusive franchise tag allowing him to negotiate with other teams.
3. KC has the right to match any offer or receive two first round picks as compensation.
4. Houston's agent is busy running his mouth and threatening to hold out to week 10.

What we don't know:

1. How aggressive the KC front office has been trying to get a deal done.
2. What KC has offered.
3. What Houston's demands are.

Obviously, it takes two to make a deal happen. Many on here are automatically blaming the front office for failing to get a deal done with one of the most prolific defensive players KC has had since DT. Almost to a point to say pay the man whatever he wants.

I for one, do not agree with that philosophy. Those same people are the ones that thought Bowe should've been paid and are now complaining that he should take a pay cut or be released.

I think there are going to be some good indicators in the near future of just how serious the front office was negotiating with Houston and his agent.

What if Houston receives NO offers on the open market? What if no other team is willing to pay Houston the kind of coin he seeks and surrender two first round picks. This is a very plausible scenario. Then he is forced to sign his tender.

IMO if NO other team is willing to compensate Houston the way he seeks then that should be a tell-tale sign that his demands are too high. Tagging Houston and letting the market dictate his salary was a very smart move.

So should his home-town team AND the rest of the NFL decides he is not worth his asking price....and should Houston be forced to sign and play under his one-year tender and he holds out for 10 months.......then the writing is on the wall who is being unreasonable.

Let time sort this out...........

Why do we continue to blame the organization? Just because we haven't had playoff success in so long? Maybe this group is trying to finally get it right.....

Isn't this the same scenario as the Jared Allen trade to the Vikings. I remember being pissed about the option for another team to sign him. I think they settled on a first and two thirds, correct? Brandon Albert and Jamaal Charles?

Except we on't have Herm drafting for us. He might have been an awful coach, but he was a great evaluator of talent. The jury is still out on Dorsey in that regards.

If houston or the Chiefs blinks(and one will) then his career isn't going to be over.

and you really can't afford to tag the same player more than twice

Houston will miss out on a lot of money though

I think he means skipping out til week 10.

he forfeits most of that money. He loses 2/3rds. So now he gets 5mil if he holds out til then. Rounding up for fun.

taxes 40%? Down to 3mil

Pa dues/agent cut/local tax/entertainment tax else where ? Maybe 1.5 to 2 mil left?

that is hard to swallow, then all the missed action and training which effects injury chances.

then after all that, i believe they can tag him again. Him holding out just gets him credit for the year.

From what i remember, could have changed.

Keep in mind that if NO team can negotiate a reasonable contract with Houston then he will be labeled a malcontent. Many teams (except maybe Dallas) will completely avoid a ME first type of player. Getting tagged and getting paid close to 13 million for a season as an outside LB is nothing to be malcontented about. However, somehow, Houston and his camp have put it out there that they are disgruntled with the situation.

While his career may not be "over," holding out and/or getting labeled a malcontent will most assuredly cost him millions. Nobody likes a whiny multi-millionaire who plays a sport for a living.

I don't get the panic. Never expected a deal before July. Top shelf veteran tradition to get an off-season off with their first major deal.

Honestly, Houston is one of my favorite Chiefs. I understand the business side of sports but I've also seen many players price themselves right out of the game. Reports out of Pittsburgh is that they are looking to cut Palomalu if he doesnt' retire because of his age and cap number.

It would be nice if all of this new "TV" money went towards lowering ticket prices and improving the fan experience versus the players. I don't think any normal blue collar worker would say that players "deserve" more money to play a sport. I don't see the need to continuously increase the salary cap. Sports salaries are out of control but that is a discussion for another day. How could anyone that gets paid millions to play a sport be dissatisfied.
