Late Night Bullshit Bar: Open

Come on in, cheap bastards. I welcome you to my humble saloon. We've got a full bar, so whatever you do, before you post in this thread, you gotta tell me what you're ordering.

We're open tonight. 'Tis a rainy day in my fair Springfield, and I've got my Christmas shit up throughout the bar, including a mistletoe that I've disguised and will expose at opportune times throughout this thread.

I've got a couple games on, right now Baylor's playing OK State. It's not exactly a big screen (the LNBS Bar is a classic dive) but it's the best I can do with all the money I've spent on the karaoke machine.

Come on in. What's on your mind? You've got a captive, borderline-alcoholic audience, and everybody wants to comment on YOUR bullshit.

Some things that have been floating around in my mind recently:

1. The Raiders loss has brought out a whole lot of interesting aspects of this board. But it reminds me why I almost always insist on watching the Chiefs with only a select few people: I can't stand the majority of grown men who are sports addicts. Women are usually more level-headed, and children are children. But grown men are huge babies, and it's incredibly aggravating to watch a game with. The CP Chat is about as bearable as it gets (the GDTs are just an orgy of intolerable id), but even in there you get a couple of assholes (*cough* pete *cough*) of people who trot out defeatist bullshit instead of weathering the ebbs and flows of the game. I don't know why it's so difficult to keep your emotions in check -- it's not even complicated.

2. We've had some conversation on this board about depression recently. I've struggled with depression earlier in my teens and early twenties, but defeated them over a protracted battle with it in my mid 20s. It takes incredible discipline, but now I fancy myself an extremely happy person. I've got my own "secrets" to it (not really secrets, but whatever) -- has anybody else in this thread defeated depression earlier in their lives? I'm very happy to share what I've learned about it should anybody care.

3. Women who are close with their parents are absolutely psychotic about them. I don't know what it is, but women are terrified of their parents. They are afraid if a parent ever comes into their home and it's in disarray, they will be banished from the family. On and on it goes. I am very close to my parents, but I've never truly cared if my parents ever approved of a girlfriend, how my home looks, or how I'm dressed. When women love their parents, they seem controlled by it. Maybe it's just my limited Ozarks exposure, but that's a stereotype I've seen develop.

not off topic
The reason they're teaching math that way now is to try to ensure that the kids actually understand the concepts of what they're doing. Before, you basically learned the "trick" to performing the math problem, but that didn't mean you actually understood what was happening. The constant groupings, regroupings, breaking apart, number sentences, etc.. etc... is an attempt to build "number sense."

I know that it seems ridiculous at times, but it actually does work. BTW, the reason we're moving to this way of teaching is that all of the asian countries that kick our ass in mathematics do it this way (look up Singapore math curriculum).

I want to talk more about Pete and his negative attitude in the game chat. I know I'll probably be told to kick rocks since I'm the new guy, but that dude is almost unbearable at times in the chat. It's constant ref blaming. Wants a flag anytime somebody touches a Chief. Not to mention every third down we have to read "3rd & Sutton" or "3rd and Reid." I don't even know exactly what they mean, but I'm sure it's negative. I could not watch a game with that dude in person.

Pete's ref blaming is a CP meme. It should have figured more prominently in his roast.

I knew someone would explain it.

I just never had time to get into others classes. So much for global education.

Well, I teach English. I just have two kids who are elementary age. One of them has learning disabilities, so I'm extremely involved in teaching him stuff at home. As such, I have to stay up on the how and why of their curriculum.
