Ozzy: Being in a band is dying art

Ozzy Osbourne says the rise of technology in music means bands are losing the ability to jam and shape ideas together.

And the Black Sabbath icon – who's the subject of a free TeamRock iPad supplement – has first-hand experience of the phenomenon.

Ozzy tells Noisey.com: “The computer age is taking over and there's a lot of trickery. I've actually seen guys in bands. You go, 'Do you want to jam?' and they go, 'Jam? What's that?' Just playing anything together. They can't do it. 'I'll have to consult my computer first.' The art of being in a band is dying.”

The singer says he's always proud when another musician is influenced by Sabbath – and he doesn't just mean by the music.

He says: “I have people at Ozzfest going, 'Man, if it wasn't for Sabbath... we owe you so much.' I go, 'What part of this is influenced by Sabbath?' I get where they're coming from but it's not the music, it's what it says to the people.

“Metal has never had any rules. If you want me to do something, tell me not to. I've never played by any rules. My sole concern is to get on that stage and give the audience a great day out. I want to give my heart and soul when I play, and that's God's honest truth.”

Ozzy recently released his retrospective set Memoirs Of A Madman – after revealing that Sabbath are gearing up to record their final album next year.

I think the landscape has changed since Pandora and Spotify, where people have actual choice in what they listen to instead of being spoonfed pop garbage. Also because indie music is so much cheaper, they're making appearances on lots of tv shows and movies.

Muse sold out a little bit, and Kings of Leon and the Black Keys' new stuff doesn't rock like their old stuff used to. But they are selling out huge arenas. So is the Arcade Fire. I don't know how metal is doing because I don't listen to it. But there's plenty of edgier indie rock that are selling out decent sized venues and could pass for a previous generation of music. It's basically saying we're not going to sell to the large corporation, but there's a booming industry in mid-sized businesses that are doing really well for themselves.

Geezer Butler wrote 99% of the lyrics for Black Sabbath. Tony Iommi and Butler wrote all the music. Bob Daisly wrote nearly all of the lyrics on the classic Ozzy solo stuff. He and Randy Rhoads did the music.

Ozzy didn't write anything. He can't sing anything outside of the key of "talk." And he hasn't been good on stage since 1972.

So how did he succeed? Well, he has a unique voice that is perfect for what he does. He also has had incredibly talented band mates over the years. And he married a record executive's daughter who will do anything necessary to make an extra nickle.

Black Sabbath and those first two solo records will always be some of my favorites, but, as with Metallica, I've grown to dislike Ozzy on a personal level. Greedy ****s.


A 67 year old Dio with stage 4 stomach cancer somehow managed to rock harder than when I watched Ozzy in his "prime" in the 80's.

Daisley wrote ALL the lyrics from Blizzard through wicked, and some of Tears and Ozzmosis...

Ozzy is a great character.

He has no substance on his own.

Geezer may be my favorite bass player, besides McCartney.

Everything vocal is auto-tuned and most of the music is electronic. We're probably not far away from having holographic "musicians" who don't actually exist performing "live" on stage at concerts.

eh. he's just giving the same argument that's been around for decades. back in the 80s bass players thought they would be replaced by keyboards and synths. drum machines would make drummers obsolete, etc.

there will always be bands, there will always be live music. pop music has always been kind of shitty. every generation complains about the next generations shit ass music.

Basically, studios compress audio so it's all at the same volume, but that takes the tension and passion out of the music than lulls and swells provide.

you can hear the difference between vamping and blowing.

Fidelity is harder to discuss online, as all the examples will be in the same lo-fi streaming quality. But there is vinyl which is analog [not without its limitations] and SACD and high bitrate digital, and of course master tapes, that are, to a trained ear, as different as SD and HDTV.

I think the loudness wars kind of predated MP3s a little bit. Californication by RHCP, which is considered the most egregious example was released in 2000 back when CDs were still a thing. fortunately, I think dynamics are becoming popular again.
