The coolest and best cooler evah!

There’s a couple of ideas here that are genuine enhancements to the traditional cooler design. Including a strip of waterproof LED lights, a ceramic blade, a stash place for disposable plates, and a divider that actually keeps water out of the other side if you choose are all things that a great cooler could and should have.

The addition of USB ports for charging phones a cameras, removable waterproof speaker for your phone, and a functional blender in the top of the machine? That’s just showing off.

They have raised $3 Million on kickstarter

If they get the price down to $119-129, I think it's a good overall idea. The key is if it lasts!

Where does the money come from? The whole idea behind Kickstarter is that the company or person behind the idea needs seed money. If they had the money to begin with they wouldn't need Kickstarter.

Edit: Here's a story about a failed kickstarter: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/...d-3-5-million/. I don't think anyone's getting their money back here.

This.

$200 is a little steep for a cooler.

You guys appear to have competing definition of 'failed'

Option one: you fail to meet your funding goal. In that scenario, the funds are returned.

Option two: you meet your funding goal, but fail to deliver the product. That's no different than any other venture capital endeavor.

Yes because lots of venture capital endeavors have this risk/reward profile:

Quote:
Pledge $5 or more
THANKS FOREVER: Your help at any level brings the COOLEST one step closer to a beach near you. For all backers at ALL levels I'll write your name on my very own COOLEST so I can thank you every time I use it, and I'll keep you informed with all the COOLEST updates.
Awesome!

Ah but let's move up in stakes. For $25 you get a t-shirt and a drink guide. For $180 you get a cooler that theoretically will be available to the general public for about the same price at about the same time. Or for $2000 you can get this:

Quote:
COOLEST BARTENDER: I will PERSONALLY fly out to your hometown and man your bar at your next event with the only COOLEST fully-functional prototype in the world. If you want to tailgate or host an event with the COOLEST before we’re available to anyone else, then this reward is for you. I make incredible drinks and dogs and kids like me. I'd love to meet you and thank you for your support in this campaign by making your next party incredible. You also get one of the first COOLESTs to roll off the final production line signed and numbered by me.
Slightly different than the risk/reward of funding a startup where the people shelling out the $$ can live with a low success ratio on the chance that one success delivers 1000x returns.

Kickstarter is a fun curiosity for a lot of people now. But how long are people going to be kicking in $5 for basically nothing, or risk losing $180 for a chance to maybe buy something that costs $180? For crowdfunding to be viable long term there has to be come kind of real reward imo.

Also what kinds of checks and balances are there on a company not paying itself (or contractor buddies) ridiculous salaries, then going bankrupt? In the real world venture capitalists would be closely monitoring that kind of thing. In kickstarter world you can produce a rickety prototype, make a slick video about it, then collect unlimited $$ from unsavvy investors with no oversight whatsoever. That kind situation is burstingly ripe for fraud.

THIS!

I don't see why some on here are dissing kickstarter here. It is risky. It is voluntary. I've not seen people get ripped off if the goal wasn't met.

You put up money and they make the goal, you may or may not ever see your money depending on how the product does in the marketplace. You think its some sort of scam, don't put your money up for a product.

It's just a twist on the old beanie baby economy.
