Tipping for services...

Not like restaurant tipping for the waiter, but tipping gardeners, postman, house cleaners, etc. Do you do it, and generally how much?

This is the first year we've paid a guy to handle our lawn. It's a business, but he's the only guy doing it. What's appropriate? Is cash preferred, or is a personal gift (wine, homemade goodies, or something) better?

Tipping is so ****ing stupid.

Businesses should be required to mention up-front if a tip is expected. I don't need to tip a Starbucks barista who gets a full time salary, but a server who is getting underpaid and lives off tips... I need to tip him or her.

Not making it clear who deserves a tip and who doesn't is unfair to workers who rely on tips to make a living.

I do that. And I've bought workmen doing jobs at our house lunch and drinks.

I may be alone on this, but rather than tip the guy, why not recommend him or her to your friends. Then let him know you did that. To me, that's the best thing you can do for a services provider who does a great job. You're basically tipping them thousands of extra dollars without paying an extra dime.

Starbucks baristas aren't salary. And they don't get to keep the tips.

Aww sounds like he's a good candidate for extra cheer. Does he look like he makes a good living? Maybe money wouldn't be as much fun as homemade treats or booze. HOMEMADE BOOZE!

I have bad allergies/asthma too. Fortunately my yard isn't all that big. I usually end up doing it a few times a year and am miserable for it.

But I can see where you're coming from.

After thinking about it, if there are social conventions within his clientele, I might drop a tip. I guess I wouldn't want to be his only customer that didn't give him a little extra. It also matters how easy it would be to replace his services. If it will be difficult to find someone to do it, maybe you should go a little farther to try and keep him around.

The other thing is if legitimately care about him as a friend. My grandma had a housekeeper when I was a kid that was awesome and her and my grandma were good friends. I could see giving her a bonus type thing.

And I guess it matters if it is a tip every time he's there or if it is a Christmas/Year end bonus type thing. I'd be more inclined to do a one time thing than a tip every visit.

As far as what to give, I'd take food from you any day of the week. It just depends on what you want to do. Food seems more from the heart since you had to do more work than going to the ATM, but sometimes food doesn't resonate. If he's single I'd definitely cook him up something nice.

Man, funk dat. That's terrible. It's just mail delivery. But I do think it is difficult to get fired. I know there are very specific avenues that must be followed to get fired from a postal position.

Misworded it. My point is that there are jobs where workers rely on tips because they're getting paid an extremely low salary. Especially in the restaurant industry.

I need to find out if he drinks... he's a family man with a young kid. Wife was thinking about making him a batch of her brown butter chocolate chip cookies... but homemade lemoncello is pretty fantastic, too.
