The West Coast is on Fire

I'm on the Northern Coast of CA and the air is filled with smoke everywhere. Ash on my car and the sun/moon is red. A friends house burnt down near hwy 299. Seems to be lots of fires everywhere. Anyone here dealing with this? We need some of that rain from Texas.

It's supposed to reach 99 today, better than 102 forecast yesterday.
But good gravy, the air quality....
Earlier this year were other fires that had the Portland area air quality worse than the 2 baddest Chinese cities.

We've lived here since '90. This last winter was by far the worst and now this summer is the same.

My wife's truck. This is at 7:15 am, the sun should be blinding from the left.

I certainly can't complain - Colorado has been relatively tame this year in terms of wildfires - but the smoke here yesterday was about as bad as it's ever been in terms of non-local fires. I had to shut the house up due to getting congested and my eyes watering.

Hope they can get things under control soon.

I mean, if you want a specific answer for this Burbank fire...

It snowed and rained so dang much that it catapulted California out of a drought. It snowed in the mountains so much this year that Mammoth closed for the ski season in AUGUST.

That's great for the drought, yay Superbloom in the desert.

However all that overgrowth in the mountains combined with the crazy stupid hot weather now and the fires were entirely predictable. The Santa Ana winds haven't even hit yet. This is the first of MANY upcoming wildfires in SoCal.

I remember the San Diego fires a while ago. That was a pretty crazy fire. Hopefully this one isn't as destructive.

And idiots.....don't forget the idiots.

The fires up in Oregon were started by a dipshit playing around with fireworks.

The biggest problem is that the western states will NOT cut back the bush - they want it to grow. So, when a fire starts, it has plenty of fuel.

Pretty much it in a nutshell.

My Wife and I just back from visiting friends in Wyoming. The smoke from the fires was so bad, you could hardly see.

And what's your theory as to why they want it to grow?

Wildfires are good for the land even if they aren't good for homes or lungs.

It's why they let Yellowstone burn. It's part of the cycle.

Hell, I don't have a clue - couldn't even begin to tell you, but it's a fact. My Friend that lives in Wyoming - tells me that the brush hasn't been cut in years (Budget maybe?)

So apparently, when lightning strikes or some dumbass camper doesn't put out his fire, this is what happens.

Indeed. Here, they set the parks on fire (to burn back the overgrowth) every year - at least at Heritage Park in Olathe..

I see.

It'd be a helluva lot of brush to take care of. I don't imagine that's really possible considering most of our vegetation is dead brush.

SoCal does do controlled burns though. Quite often actually.
