As for people talking on their phones, that seems to be mostly older people. My kids' peers almost never seem to talk on their phones. They almost exclusively text.

Middle school is worse.

I may as not be around when a kid wants to play with the phone.
I should do the lessons on a phone.

Our school policy is it is to be put away during class unless the teacher says it can be used-searching net for class, calculator.

But, I am a little different. The first day of class, I tell the kids to put all electronics on the table. Explain to them that when they are in class, it can stay on the table instead of in their pocket or sweatshirt hoodie pocket.

The reasoning is that if it is visible, I know where it is, and they are not trying to sneak a text.

When I see a kid with text face, you can tell they are focused on texting and not class.

When a kid is looking down, I can tell it is not at their notes.
Then I say they are only looking at one of two things. Their phones or their crotch.

One is not acceptable and the other is just weird.

Mobile phone etiquette is needed. But is should not be taught in school. We have other things to focus on.

Eh, seems like most of it would work itself out.

If someone is dumb enough to check their phone during an interview, they won't get the job. If someone gets a bad grade because they can't pay attention for more than 2 minutes at a time, they should be able to figure out why their grades suck. If I go out with someone who's constantly checking their phone for things that aren't urgent, I won't make them a priority.

I'm with BRC when it comes to not being able to ignore my phone... I'm not rude about it and won't check it when I'm in the middle of conversation unless it starts ringing, but I don't know why anyone would be all 'hey look at that guy glued to his phone' if I'm checking it at a hockey game or a restaurant or wherever. IT doesn't have off hours, and uh, mind your own business?

There has been one particular issue that I have just started experiencing recently and it pisses me off to no end.. people talking on their cell phones in a college library, even with the countless number of signs saying not to. When I am in the library studying for a test, writing a paper or whatever I don't want to hear someone talk on their damn phone. Yes, I could move, but that is very inconvenient for me who is actually in the library attempting to be productive. Can't people just have the common courtesy to walk outside and talk, while others are trying to work inside?

If you are above a Tier II tech, I think its expected that you are on call in case of a disaster or a major outage in your area of expertise. Just the way the field works. Most of the time you are not getting paid but try not answering your phone when work calls and see how long you keep your job.

This will all end when the general public learns that cellphones can be bad for your health!

DDT was once sprayed on kids as a bug repellant.

Cigs used to be a cool thing to do and wasn't bad for your health.

eh, DDT isn't the worst thing in the world. rachel carson used a HUGE amount of hyperbole.

Quote:
Many of Carson's claims were overblown. While DDT is highly toxic to insects and fish and can poison other animals in large enough doses, in moderate amounts it's not especially harmful to birds and mammals, including humans. (Ironically, the EPA's own judge agreed, but was overruled by its chief administrator.) No one has conclusively proved that DDT can give you cancer. The cause of eggshell thinning is likewise poorly understood.

am I saying it's harmless? absolutely not. but it can and should be used in responsible amounts as a target against mosquitos (malaria is a mother****er)

BRC is so important and dedicated to his job he'd check a text while mounted upon his Mrs.

I'm in business. I get that part. Very little of what I'm talking about is business related.

If I've taken Bearcat out for a business lunch to discuss a project or contract etc and he spends half of it texting his girlfriend....That's what I'm talking about. Or the people on dates or in groups who don't actually communicate because they can't take their face out of their phone.

If you would just meet her...

Hopefully a quick 'hey, can we focus on this...' would take care of something like that, but yeah, it would be pretty annoying and rude if you're there for work and they're checking facebook or whatever. Checking your phone during an interview is kind of mind boggling, too, and I've heard similar stories.

Something I find interesting is when I'm talking with someone and I get a text, after they do that dumb 'is it mine' thing (even though their phone has never made that sound), they get a dumbfounded look like 'uh, are you going to check that?' I don't mind if people check their phone as long as there's some kind of acknowledgement if I'm talking, so I don't continue rambling to someone who's clearly not paying attention.... but, it's funny that people talking to me will actually think I should interrupt them and check my phone.

The roulette sounds interesting, but you're going to have to get their attention somehow to propose it.

Probably best to start by just knocking the damn thing out of their hands.

One thing that ticks me off: more than a few times I've had someone ringing my order up at a register (say at a Dollar General, Big Lots or somewhere like that) while talking on a cell phone the entire time. Sometimes I get a nod of the head or a whispered "How are you today?" at the very beginning but after that eye contact is severed and there is no contact at all.
