Nice, affordable communities in driving distance to Kansas City?

My mom has been living in Kansas City for a few years now, but isn't altogether familiar with the surrounding communities.

She's lived in upscale condos, but her longtime boyfriend(high school sweetheart and been together since my parents divorce almost 20 years ago) recently passed.

She doesn't need all the space, or the nearly $2300/mo for rent, HOA fees, utilities, etc anymore.

She'd like to get to a more affordable area where she can buy a decent/nice condo for probably under $120,000. Sounds like she might even be open to renting, but I can't imagine there'd be many 2 bedroom places for under $800/mo.

Anyone have suggestions for nice, safe smaller communities outside of KC that would fit the bill? Know any landlords with any such property to rent?

She's okay with a drive of up to a half an hour as she still works in KC.

Any help would be appreciated. Leave suggestions and comments in the thread, any specifics can be PM'd. Thanks in advance.

Two of my sibling live in there. I was just back for my Niece's graduation from Staley (10th graduating class). Really nice school. Great, great music program.

They had the fricken KC Philharmonic backing up their end of year show. It was really something and the kids were talented and they knew what they were doing.

Alright. Thanks for all of the suggestions. Many have been very helpful.

I have new info, something I should have asked initially, but didn't occur to me.

South of KC works best for her

Its also Kansas City, Mo. I dont know why everyone keeps calling it the Staley area. The history is Staley Farms on the National Historic register. My uncle took a job there working the farm as a teen to help my Grandparents before being shipped off to the Army and WWII.

If move there your gonna pay KCMO taxes that will be sunk into that shithole midtown where money is pouring in and nothing happens.

Yes I'm familier with area, and I concur with your statement definitely stay out of KCMO and be sure to tell the realtor that this is not negotiable when looking for a property in the area.

We had a very nice townhouse in Belton. I never really understood the hate, we enjoyed our couple years there. Would have been there longer had we not up and moved the South Carolina.

Unless she needs to live that close, you could look a little further out, like say Warrensburg. Could get a lot of bang for your buck there.
