Don't need to be an intel homer to dislike pretty much everything about that suggested build.

You could build a Haswell i5 system for that price.

Yeah, I got my iMac on CL.

It's a 2011 21.5" so it was the last one (I think) they build stock with i7 instead of the i5.

It retailed for almost $2000 but the lady spent 7 months with it and finally decided to go back to Windows. I got it for $800 and it had barely been used.

PC power not only DOES affect your internet browsing experience, it also determines how long your machine will be relevant.

That DIY combo posted will take him far longer to get irritated with speedwise than the refurb. For a hundred bucks more :/

Its easy to build, but if he doesnt want too, I bet he has a local friend who will help him out.

Spend a little more and getting a lot more is just better value, especially when he has already set aside 500 for budget.

I don't have a local tech friend.

I'm not sure I feel comfortable with what I'm looking at to make a decision on what I need to buy or should buy.

I've got a friend in Seattle who might help so maybe I'll start there.

Building a PC is pretty easy, but I don't recommend it for you. You don't save that much money, if any. You don't get the same degree of tech support and warantee coverage. And you have a greater chance of running into what may be a simple problem to someone motivated to build their own but that you don't want to hassle with figuring out how to fix. Don't let these guys push you into a DIY if you'd be happier just buying one.

If building one sounds intriguing to you, then by all means give it a try because it's not hard and you'd get a lot of help from the guys here at CP. But it's not as simple as buying an off the shelf, fully functioning, tech support included, power-up-and-start-computing box from a reputable vendor.

I disagree on the money part. You can build a computer with better components, that is upgradeable, and better performing than most pre-built computers at the same price point.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I don't think upgradeability matters much in this case (since he's not interested in getting tech savvy) and I don't think the money you can save is significant enough to be worth it if you aren't getting some degree of satisfaction out of building your own. I do agree that it's nice to be able to pick quality parts, but again, I'm not sure it makes very much difference. I'm all for building your own, and I've done it several times, but some people don't want to do it and that's OK.

My advice would be to watch for bargains on sites like techbargains.com and when he sees something in his price range that meets the system requirements for the things he wants to do, google for reviews, and if they're satisfactory, just buy it and be done with it.

There's no value for him at all if he doesn't want to, or can't, do it.

We can help you with what to buy. That part is easy.

As for the building... well as was said before, its about as hard as putting together legos. Couple youtube videos up on the old PC as you put the new one together and your golden~

I had a lot of legos growing up but I didn't pay for those.

Yeah i agree with what others are saying regarding the ease of a build. Seriously man, just watch a youtube vid. Don't be intimidated by it. It's not hard at all. Just double check everything and be thorough, that's it.

NOt sure what you think of this one...

or this, since you stream and won't likely get a great graphics card in a pre-built under 500, the AMD A series have integrated Radeon Graphics chip that is far better than Intel's integrated graphics.
