If your laptop has a USB 3.0 port docking stations are cheap and work well. At the house I have a 32” monitor. The one I have at the farm has 2 22” monitors through docking stations. My office is a room that I can shut the door. I’d probably struggle without a door. Maybe you’re wired differently than me. The biggest problem is that it is really easy to find something else to do at the house. And you just have to man up and do it. Setting up a workday helps establish a routine. But for me I have to set goals for the timeframe. Then I usually end up rage pounding on the keys because I’m really task oriented and can’t bring myself to just find a good stopping point. I might be a psycho. But it works. |

I have a laptop with a docking station and 2 22" monitors, company phone and they pay for my internet. I'm the only one here during the day, so I'm super productive, with no distractions. Greatest thing about working from home is no commute, followed by your own private bathroom, followed by working in concert tshirts year round, followed by the beer fridge next to my desk. Also, since my work life is blended with my personal life, here I am on a Saturday morning bullshitting on CP and getting a little work done. I personally enjoy that balance.
The downsides of working from home, especially if you're an introvert like me, is that it can lead to a serious lack of exposure to the rest of the company. I've vowed to do more video conferencing to stay visible so I keep a button up shirt hanging in my bathroom. Also, and this may be more specific to my employer, but all it takes is a shift in leadership for some dinosaur executive to come up with a hot take that working in an office creates a more collaborative environment and they start laying off the remote staff. I've survived a few of those in the past and am currently being pressured to relocate to our LA office, which ain't happening unless they show me the money. Working with that constant anxiety is a bit annoying. |

No advice to give other than have your "dress to impress" PJ's on for a big "phone interview". I'd say the whole compensation package is on the table but it's just a feeling
Home office. I suggest a separate room as far away from home activities as possible, If that's not possible, then partitions. so just do whatever makes you happy, but isolation from family IMHO is key. You can no longer deduct home office expenses if you are an employee: 1099 or sole proprietorships are different. Whatever you can get from prior employer, the better. FWIW Keeping everyone, the wife, out of your office, except real emergencies, even if it's to open a jar of pickles, is my "best practices" tip Try to get your new employer to send you a decent docking station, monitor and keyboard as whatever you spend, if they don't reimburse you, is on your dime. There is no longer deducting un-reimbursed expenses. Good luck, Working from home, doing what you love, is a great thing, Skype is your friend when you feel isolated.
