The Dark Tower
Holy shit, it's actually happening. For real.
Starring Idris Elba as the gunslinger (which might explain the recent weird rumor about a white actress being cast as susannah...) and Matthew McConaughey as the man in black. Directed by Nikolaj Arcel and targeted to be in theaters next January. Somehow. Quote:

Will not watch. I've read the Tower series 5 maybe 6 times first book to last. Was really looking forward to a quality film rendition.
Can not believe they ****ed up the casting like this. Not only a black actor but the guy from the Wire? Jesus.

At least if they're going weird with the character they're also going for quality. He's one of the best actors of this generation.

And I heard from a couple of sources (folks who claim to have read an older draft of the script from a couple years ago) that
Spoiler!
Again, that could be totally off. But if it's true that kinda opens it all up and makes everything exciting, I think. |

All right, all right, all Randall.
What do we think?

I think he looks like the Flagg we all know, if he can recreate his way out weirdness from True Det. It'll be great

That looks pretty incredible. Almost exactly my mind's eye impression of Flagg (well, from The Stand; the dark tower books I have read are more chasing than catching so there's not a lot of interaction with Flagg).

Remember how King gave a very specific, detailed account of how Flagg would flash that evil smile in the books? McConaughey was born to pull off that smile.

I can't wait for this. I LOVE what they're doing with the story. The casting is pitch perfect. I'm ALL ****ING IN.
This is the most excited I've been for a major budget film in a long time. |

Throw in the Texas accent and the easy charm and I think he's just a dead ringer. I think RDJ could do it and do okay, but I don't think there's anybody mainstream you could cast that's better than McConaughey will be.

I still don't want him to be Bond, though...

His initial interaction with Susannah, the way in which he came to know her and she him, was built in part around her bringing experience as a black woman who had suffered at the hands of racism and him being a white man and therefore a target of her scorn and derision as Detta. He and Eddie are grey meat. They are honky mafahs. King did a masterful job of creating and using the racial tension between Detta and Roland to forge a father-daughter bond between them when Detta was driven back and Susannah allowed to take over. Elba is a hell of an actor. I hope they manage to make this one of the good King movies and not one of the many that have failed miserably in translation from page to screen.
