"All-star" officiating crew for Rams-Chiefs game

NFL ups intensity with all-star officials for Rams-Chiefs game

Kevin Seifert
ESPN.com NFL Nation

The NFL took the unusual step this week of assigning an "all-star" officiating crew to the most highly anticipated game of the season, adding to the playofflike frenzy for Monday night's matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams.

Referee Clete Blakeman will work the game with only two members of his regular crew, umpire Ramon George and down judge Dana McKenzie. The other five officials -- including Jim Lapetina, who will handle replay -- were plucked from four other crews.

The approach is similar to how the NFL assigns officials to playoff games, a process that is based on performance and seniority rather than crew. But it is rarely, if ever, employed before the postseason. Officials typically work on the same eight-person crews throughout the regular season to maximize continuity and familiarity among members.

Individual crew members are occasionally juggled for health or scheduling reasons. But a series of actions this season have indicated the league is moving away from the consistent crew concept, in favor of a more aggressive administration of officiating. Earlier this season, the league bounced down judge Hugo Cruz among four crews before ultimately making him its first-ever official to be fired for performance during the season.

NFL spokesman Michael Signora confirmed Sunday that "there is a rotation amongst the crews throughout the season." Signora did not provide details on the decision to overhaul Blakeman's crew for Monday night's game.

An officiating source said Sunday that the five officials added to Monday night's crew are all highly respected and have performed well this season.

The Chiefs-Rams game, originally scheduled to be played in Mexico City before it was relocated to Los Angeles, is a rare matchup. Since 1970, there have been only four other games pitting teams with one or fewer losses this late in the season. And according to the Elias Sports Bureau, this is the latest matchup ever between two teams averaging at least 33 points per game.

The following is the full crew for Monday night's game, as listed on the official flip card published by the NFL, with the officials' permanent referee in parentheses:

Referee: Clete Blakeman

Umpire: Ramon George (Blakeman)

Down judge: Dana McKenzie (Blakeman)

Line judge: Rusty Baynes (John Hussey)

Field judge: Dale Shaw (Jerome Boger)

Side judge: Brad Freeman (Clay Martin)

Back judge: Tony Steratore (Boger)

Replay: Jim Lapetina (Brad Allen)

That fumble and TD they had to review and overturn was horseshit. I mean, how do you miss the call on that to begin with? It’s was very obvious Mahomes arm was going forward. It wasn’t even close to a fumble.

The officials were rattled by the crowd.

It wasn't malevolent but it was incompetent and it was to our detriment.

Like the female ref in the Browns game picking up the flag for illegal block in the back when it obviously happened. The crowd boo'd so loud they picked it up and announced there is no penalty for illegal block in the back cuz crowd r pissed.

I think that was a block in the back and I have no idea why Harris would do that since his initial block took Barron out of the play?

As for the Tyreek flag, I don’t see a problem there bc he was looking right at the defender when he did it.

Last thing was when Andy got heated over the Chris Jones tip. I don’t expect the officials to get that one very often. That did not look like a tipped ball in live action. Perfect use for the challenge flag to change the call.

What pissed me off the most were a few non calls:

The false start non-call on Whitworth was bullshit.
Suh should have had a personal foul called on his ass for that bullshit punch/headlock.
Peters should have been called for taking his helmet off.
There was a DL who was held like a mother****er on one of Goff’s big plays right in front of the refs. It was right in the middle of the field. Think it was Xavier Williams who was held.

The NFL sure does some stupid stuff. Now the teams that get that regular crew considered not worthy for the marquee monday night game what are they to think lol. Those teams this weekend should refuse the shit crew that wasn't considered good enough.

Once the match-up left Mexico...The NFL decided to make it a home tribute game for the victims. Once this was decided, they put together a hand-picked crew to ensure the game had the desired outcome. There was no reason to put a custom crew together...and the first time they have ever done it. Suspicious?

They manufactured a football game into some Hollywood "feel good" story with a happy ending.

I called this shit from a mile away...and it played exactly like i said.

Chiefs got the hurricane Katrina treatment...coupled with two LA teams in the post-season hunt.

I've never seen that amount of flags thrown against a visiting team...to start a game, in 40+ years of watching football. It was very "off"....the refs came out of the gate ready to bury the Chiefs. It not a coincidence that KC was the #1 scoring team in the 1st quarter...refs didn't waste any time getting LA a 13-0 lead.

The refs are going to be in a state of confusion in that Sunday night Chargers/Steelers game...they wont know who to cheat for. My guess is the Chargers...we might actually witness the Steerlers o-line get a holding call.
